interview for two new grad psych jobs

Hi! Next week I have two interviews, one on a Neuropsychiatry, Motivated Behaviors, & Schizophrenia unit and a second on a general adult & Psych ED unit (same floor, cross-trained staff). I work as a tech at an inpatient free-standing psychiatric hospital and have a minor in psychology. I'm going to be interviewing with both units and then I assume having share time on the units as well. What should I be looking for and what do you guys think will give me the most well-rounded experience as a new grad?

I'm not sure what "motivated behaviors" means, but I believe neuropsychiatry includes Alzheimer's and other dementias. That part could feel alot like working in a nursing home. Personally, I'd pick the general adult and psych ED unit as my first choice, since it would have more variety (I think). Ask the interviewers what each unit includes to be sure!

According to the website, the neuropsychiatry unit provides "individualized inpatient treatment for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders for: maladaptive behavior related to substance-abuse and sexual offense disorders; affective and behavioral disturbances associated with neurological disorders, e.g. traumatic brain injury; and for patients with a continued need for intensive schizophrenia programming post inpatient admission". Patient diagnoses include acute and chronic schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disorder.

Wow, Dolce! Sounds like you've scored an amazing interview for a new grad! I'm graduating in May, too, and really want to enter directly into psych. I'm curious as to what state you're in and where/what this hospital is! Sounds like a great place to start, with lots of opportunity! Good luck on your interviews!

The N.MB & S has a fancier title so I'd guess they have more money too and go with that one for training opportunities.

The general psych is probably a dumping ground for those not worthy of the elite N, MB & S service. Staff are probably hard to distinguish from patients.

Each has good learning opportunity.

Hmm...I'll definitely take that into consideration. I'm interviewing on the general psych floor first, and then doing share time with both so I think it'll depend on what kind of vibes I get from the managers too.

Well I had the interviews last week and it was madness. The general psych unit presented a variety of advancement and educational opportunities, and the staff were really supportive and the neuro/behavioral/schizo unit offered the opportunity for specialization, and continuing ed, but a much steeper learning curve. I will hopefully hear back soon. :)

I hope I'm as lucky as you when I finish school 4 months from now. I've been talking to quite a few nurses lately who went straight into psych right after getting their nursing degree who say they've never looked back...so I too now have decided to skip the two year detour through med-surg purgatory and get on with what I know for sure I want to do.
