ADN to PMHNP

Hello,

First off, has anyone done this? I am finishing up my ADN and need a little advice. I have an undeniable passion towards mental health and have worked in the field for the past two years. My ultimate goal is PMHNP and I already have a B.S. in Health Science. What is my next step? Is it obviously an RN-BSN program? Does anyone know of a program in which you can enroll straight from an ADN?

I hope these questions are not too asinine and I appreciate any input. I read the forums frequently and am always impressed with the abundant wisdom.

I would bet they are available especially since you already have a bachelors but something to consider is that anytime you are circumventing the BSN they are charging you masters level tuition for bachelors level courses which I personally find offensive. The other thing and this was just my personal comfort level, I actually wanted to get my BSN so I had better opportunities for work while I was in NP school as well as on the off chance that something happened and I wasn't able to finish my MS at least I would still be a BSN.

Jules A! Thank you so much! Great points I had not considered.

I was an ADN, went to brick and mortar for my BSN (I chose this school because it had a great reputation and the Psych NP program), did the BSN in 2 years, then straight into grad school, 2 year program. We had people that had their RN and a previous BSN in another field and they were able to do a 1 year accelerated BSN for nursing and then go straight into the grad program. It was tough for them but I know many of them worked at the same time. I found the bachelors portion of my education to be ridiculously easy after the associates program, it was mostly theory with a bit of pharma and patho.

I also chose the bachelors path for the

financial reasons JulesA mentioned and I wanted that BSN in case I decided to change my mind about my path during the program, I would still have that degree.

Thank you so much Barnstormin! I believe I will go the brick and mortar route for my BSN first then go from there. Thanks for the response.

Barnstormin' could you send me a private message? I am looking to relocate and would love to know what school you attended for your Psych NP program. (I do not have enough post to send private messages but it appears I can receive them).

Also, as a BSN graduate of the school , we pretty much had guaranteed admission to the grad program ahead of all of the other qualified outside applicants (of which there were literally hundreds). Good luck, make good choices financially and time wise and it will really pay off in the long run.
