Some people are depressed by it. The work can be hard, the pay can be low, and for a new grad, it can pigeon hole you. I work at an ALF (psych) but we have LTC dementia as well.

Our older population, deserve great nurses also.

I work at a LTC on a sub-acute rehab floor, and it it is hard, but rewarding work.

When I get floated to the LTC floors, I find it rewarding in a different way. The people there live there, so your in their home, helping them live the best life they can have , I also sign up to go on field trips with the residents.

It's not awful at all. I enjoy my job as a PCT. Nursing is not all ER and med/surg. It's helping those in need. It's providing gentle compassionate care to those most vulnerable. Sometimes my job is just me listening to a resident while they tell me stories, sometimes it's diapers, and sometimes it's redirection of scary stuff (psych can be a lot of that). I wear a lot of hats, I find it both challenging and rewarding. :)
