Unsure of which route to take

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Gonna make this a long story short. I graduated in 2014 with my Ba in Sociology. I already had all of my pre reqs done, and re took a few after I graduated. My original plan was the Absn route, however I researched and found there was ELM (perfect since my goal is to become a NP). I applied and was denied from all. I did get an interview from one school (Acusa Pacific) but they still denied me. Defeated but not broken I recently ordered the TeAs prep book so I can apply to more programs the next round for applications (absn/bsn).

However, I don't have the highest overally gpa. Unfornately I do have a 2.7 cumulative (not failing my prereqs). I would say I did average in my prereqs (A in anatomy, b+ in physio, b in micro, a in stats, b in lifespan, c- in psych, b+ in ochem, b/c for english 1a/b) I volunteered as a peer health educator in undergrad, Im currently a MCH volunteer, I did an clinical internship last summer, plus work experience in customer service. I dont think Im a horrible applicant but I know my gpa holds me back. I am retaking Psych currently since a few schools told me the C- is not passing.

I been working towarss this goal since 19 ( I am 24 now) I made mistakes during my undergrad but I am super passionate about this profession and want a fair chance.

Can anyone provide any advice on what I should do? Constructive feedback please! :)

(Btw, im on my phone so disregard the errors)

Based on the information you've provided, it would appear that your GPA is not adequate. If so, there is only one way to fix this.... taking additional courses and making A's in them. It is not a quick fix. Nursing programs are very challenging. It is not unusual for GPAs to take a nosedive in nursing programs, even for "strong" students who come in with > 3.5 GPA.

A cumulative GPA is normally used for any accelerated program admission decision. Those programs are extremely intensive, and the cumulative GPA is the best indicator of your overall scholastic ability. You may have better luck with generic nursing programs.

You most likely won't be accepted into any ABSN programs because of your low GPA. You may fare best applying for an ADN program and progressing from there.

Hey SweetMemi, have you applied to Samuel Merritt University's ABSN? I'd consider it if I were you since they only look at your last 60 units GPA + your science prerequisite GPA (must be above 3.0). Your prereq GPA will look better after retaking that psych class, but they do require two additional prerequisites (Pathophysiology and Pharmacology). You can take these two classes at Yuba City Community College online this summer. I'd enroll there as soon as you can if you want to ensure that you sign up for these courses that start in the summer. I took them last summer, and they were both 5 week courses. Very intense but I found these course structures to be organized well, so it wasn't too bad. With that said, you still have time to be able to apply for Fall 2016 start (deadline is March 1), and you can have courses in progress when you apply. One way or another, I'm confident you'll be able to become a nurse! Good luck!

Hella late reply, but I did look at SMU. I'm going to call to see if I can take pathophysio and pharm during the application process (I know they allow some prereqs to still be in progress). I just can't do it now at the moment.

I did decide to look at the community college route, even though I was advised that hospitals are not looking to hire ADNs. But my preference is to get a BSN, so I will do a bridge RN-BSN program if that is the route for me.

Thanks for all the replies! I feel better about this approach.
