Question: A&P Prep for 1st semester

Hey all!!

I could use some of your advice. I'm starting my first semester of NS in the fall. It has been a while since I've taken A&P and I had a really terrible instructor for A&P II. Basically, I cannot tell you anything except how neurons work. What would you suggest I review for NS? I am thinking the cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrine systems. Is there anything else you'd suggest? Through youtubing, I am seeing a lot about electrolytes. We didn't cover that AT ALL in my A&P II class. Should I review this as well?

We covered fluids, electrolytes, acids, bases, etc. including neural activity in our AP2 class. It might be a good idea for you to get out the book(s) and review.

We covered a lot of that in my A&P II class. Luckily, I had an amazing professor for that class. It's just the systems that I know close to nothing about. I plan to review all that material this summer. I should probably add acids/bases/etc. to the list! Thank you for the reply!!

Really, you're going to want a thorough understanding of all of the body systems. When you'll need to know each one will vary by your curriculum. Definitely know the electrolytes and how they affect the body, and start learning about the acid/base balance and what happens when the pH is tipped one way or the other. It'll help a TON when you start learning about ABGs. Understanding the electrolytes is a really important part of med/surg. Remember the whole "trace a drop of blood" through the body. Also, remember osmosis and kidney function, and remember what is supposed to "fit through" to make urine and what's not, because many disease processes affect this.

Thanks RunBabyRun!! I didn't even think about the kidneys and we definitively spent quite a bit of time on them. If only I could retake that class LOL, wishfull thinking. At least I have a couple months to review everything!!

Yup, you'll spend a lot of time on kidneys. Liver, too. Review how the liver affects clotting. That alone will help you understand A LOT of disease processes better, as well as why certain meds impact the liver the way they do, and why that can be so bad.
