Online Anatomy Class, am I crazy?

Hi there,

I am thinking about taking anatomy online this summer. I do have the option of taking a scheduled class, but I would prefer to do it at my own pace. In general, I'm a pretty disciplined student and have done well in my other prerequisites so I think I might be well suited for an online class. Has anyone else done this? Thoughts? I am thinking about doing it through Santa Barbara City College.

I would definitely take the scheduled class for A&P because you will need that "hands-on" experience that you would not get in an online class. Pictures in the textbook and online makes anatomy look "pretty" when actually it is quite different in reality. Body parts are not colored coded and labeled like they are on models and pictures. Hopefully you will be taking an A&P lab where you should be dissecting something (we dissected cats). Sounds gross but it's actually very enlightening! I made an A in both A&P I and II. I loved A&P but be prepared to STUDY STUDY STUDY. I think my favorite class so far though is Microbiology.

This is the one class I would never take online. Just my opinion. I needed to touch the models, take them apart and put them back together in order to understand things like muscles that are layered.

Hello there,

I'm taking my A&P class at UNM, and it's not so great in the hybrid format! We take one day a week for lecture, and the rest of the time is independent study & taking quizzes. It takes a LOT of discipline, and if your study habits need a little work, I would not do the online class. Just my opinion, though. It's up to you. Best of luck, whichever you decide!

Anatomy is a very fast paced class even over a full semester so if you are taking it over the summer you won't have flexibility in pace no matter how you take it.

I agree with the previous posts that a summer online class will not be at your own pace. Your teacher will set the pace and you have to keep up. I would not take this class online, especially for summer since they are getting a full semester into a shorter timeframe. These classes are the foundation of nursing. I also agree that things in the book are pretty and nice, but there is a huge difference on seeing something in a 2-D and 3-D format. I know that our teacher has made comments about how much of a disaster the hybrid course at our college is (students only coming in for lab and studying the rest at home and having to teach themselves) and that a lot of those students now halfway through the semester are trying to get into the on-campus classes because they are not doing very well. The processes can be very complex and it helps to be in class, be able to ask questions and get immediate feedback, touch and take apart models and work with the other students.
