NLN Advice

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I will taking it next month. I do have the study guide. Can anyone pass on any info or wisdom that they wish they had before taking it?! I am so nervous as my school is looking for a 99 percentile score. Yikes.

I bought the Nusring School and Allied Health Entrance Exams book. Some of it seems to go beyond what we need to know as some sections are very advanced. Is the Barron one written by two women?! I think I have heard of that one. How about the Kaplan one?! Thanks!!

My school is requesting a 120 or better on the composite.. would that be hard to get? I am horrible at math, but pretty good at everything else. I take it in two days... any tips??

I took the NLN two weeks ago so I'll add my $.02. I studied the math and science QUESTIONS (not the review material) from the study guide, but didn't even look at vocab. Now, I haven't had an algebra class in 15 years (and I didn't do WELL 15 years ago), I've NEVER had a physics class or a chemistry class. My composite score was 124. I did go through the practice questions with my husband which is a science and math guru, but I spent only a weekend studying. My current A&P class helped a good bit as well. I did not think the test questions were very difficult. As long as you have some biology and BASIC chemistry, physics and electricity knowledge, you'll be fine. As far as the math goes, know how to do percentages and ratios. It seemed to me like there was a lot of those.

GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks alot! Yeah, I have been reviewing the material, last week were also midterms, so i havent had much time to look at it. Math is my worst subject, I am not very good at it at all, but if its just mostly percentages and fractions, i think I will do fine. Scince, yeah; I havent taken it in quite a few years, but I am going to continue reading over it as kind of a refresher.... again... thanks alot!

I thought of a couple more things after my post last night. On MY test (they are probably different) there were 3 questions in the science portion on the Kelvin scale. One was a conversion to celsius, one was a conversion to Fahrenheit and the other was a graph with 4 lines running through it and we had to pick the line that represented the Kelvin scale. I remember those because I reviewed the Kelvin scale, but not enough to be able to do the conversions. I was mad.

As far as math goes, it's my weakest point and I did fine. As long as you understand basic math, subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division of decimals and fractions you'll be ok. The math questions were not HARD, there was just a lot of different computations needed for one problem. For instance, there was one question like this:

5 crackers has 350 calories, 3 oz of cheese has 100 calories, 4 tablespoons of yogurt has 275 calories, 1 cup of grapes has 450 calories (I'm totally making these calories up here!!). Joe is only allowed 500 calories for his afternoon snack. He ate 3 crackers, 7 oz of cheese, 1 tablespoon of yogurt and 1 pint of grapes, how many extra calories did Joe eat?

I, of course, can't remember the exact foods or calories, but it's these types of math problems you will see. But don't forget about those percentages and ratios that I mentioned in my last post.

One other thing, there were NOT any time, distance etc. calculations on the science portion like what's in the study guide. It's good because I had not memorized those formulas!! Please keep in mind though that this is just what was on MY test, I'm sure there are different tests so use this only as a GUIDE!!!

Again, good luck!

Yeah, I was kind of worried at first about the formulas.. yeah I have noticed its not so much as hard, as it it just concentrating and memorizing.. it can surely wear your mind out thats for sure!! Man, by the time i stop looking over this book, I am exhausted!! I cant imagine sitting there for four hours.. just tasks me a while to get my brain thinking, but once it gets going, im okay... I will see Tom. and let you know how it goes.. thanks so much for your help!!!

Soooooooo . . . . . . . how did you do?
