My GPA is completely shot. Do I have a chance of getting into any school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Currently I have a extremely low GPA. It is at 2.3  and I am really of ashamed of myself. But I want to pull myself up out of the mud and become a nurse.

I am going to a super expensive private university in NY, and this semester I will transfer to a community college in order to fulfill prerequisites.(Will they see me going from a 4 year to a 2 year to a nursing school harm me?) A large problem is I don't know if even if I take all the prerequisites will my GPA still be so rough that no school will accept me. I have taken multiple sciences course already but I don't know if that gonna help. The best I have is Bio 1000 and Chem 1000 with a B and b-.:(

I have a strong preference to New York or Georgia Schools but does anyone know any colleges that would look at only my prerequisites?

Have you or anyone else you know ever been in a worse position, and how long did it take you to pull yourself out of the hole?

Does anyone have any general advice or words of wisdom?

Your hopes are definitely not shot!!! I went to a community college on and off for a few years before I realized what I wanted to do so I wasn't trying my hardest. When I found out what I wanted to do and which classes I needed then I did very well. It makes a huge deference when you find out what you want to do and how hard you have to work to achieve it! Plus, nursing programs focus in on certain classes, not your whole GPA from all of your classes. You said you haven't taken your pre reqs yet so that very good because nursing programs put a lot of emphasis on those, and then your core reqs. Just find nursing programs your are interested in and find out what classes they require you to take to apply. Take them and do your absolute best, if you've already taken some of the classes then you can retake them(I had to re-take a psychology class that I previously got a D in). It really just depends on the program and what they require to get in. Most go off of a point system. My program would give you points as long as you made a C or better on some classes, and then for the pre reqs(mostly science classes) they would give maybe 4pts for an A 3pts for a B and so on, the more points the better...As long as you have determination, it can happen...hope this made sense! and good luck!

When I was younger and had first started going to community college I had no idea what I wanted to do! I didn’t take school very seriously and it reflected in my GPA. After realizing how much I was interested in the medical field and what it took to get into a good nursing school, I buckled down. I retook some courses and turned my C’s into A’s. I am now currently enrolled in nursing school and loving it. I start my second semester in a few weeks and couldn’t be more excited. I know it may sound tedious, time consuming and costly, but maybe retaking a couple of courses to beef up your GPA would help? If you’re determined and know for sure that this is truly what you want to do, then you can make it![/quote']

I did the same thing... (retook classes) and it helped bring my GPA up.

You can do it. I had a 1.93 GPA from screwing up in the past and not thinking of withdrawing. Once I decided to do nursing, I had to retake everything and got into my BSN program with a 3.47. Any things possible!!

Early on in my academic career due to unforeseen circumstances, I fell in the hole with a VERY VERY Low GPA 0.9! I pulled myself out by retaking those courses and doing exceptionally well and over a span of just one year, I raised my GPA to 3.2.

This advise only applies if it is a situational issue instead of not being able to comprehend the subject. An "A" student can have a difficult time in their life and fail a class. Once they are through it and retake the class, they can get an "A". A "D" student can have the same situation, but not get an "A" when they retake the class.

You need to determine if you have the ability of understanding the material with remediation or a tutor and realistically determine if you are capable of getting an A or high B in those classes. There is no use wasting your money retaking a class if you are going to get a C or D.

Its is definitely from the amount of time I didnt put in, not comprehension.

I am going to start looking at specific programs and their requirements and do well in those classes. Thank you for the advice.

Thanks you for the motivation.:)

Wow from .9 to 3.2 That's truly amazing. If you can pull that off I can definitely get a higher Grades.

I wanted to let you know that I'm an LPN and just finished RN school. I had a 2.3 when I applied and they definitely questioned me regarding the low GPA. I had taken their entrance exam and got a score that was near perfect, so I was accepted. I did struggle most of the year and it was anxiety inducing. I made it though, you have to put in the effort for nursing because you can't just fly through with little studying. I think you have a shot.
