Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I can't seem to find anyone who has taken the Kaplan Nursing School Entrance Exam. Has anyone on this forum taken this exam? If so, would you mind giving some insight as to how the test was?

I am applying to a school that requires this exam, but it's either a brand new exam or not many schools use it for whatever reason.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

@sle80: the math was very basic. I was surprised at how simple they were. Like some were literally just adding or subtracting decimals ans you just use the calc for that. I didnt see too many word problems if any. I think you would have plenty of time for the math section! Hope that helps. For math, i studied all of the practice problems to make sure i knew how to do them all. Science seemed specific, but it was all about the human body processes. Like others have discussed in threads like these, i suggest brushing up on anatomy and physiology aspects. Make sure you know what exactly your school will be counting for your entrance exam! :)

Thanks sbrook5 and all others who have offered advice! I will be studying all sections thoroughly......Good Luck to you on your exam! Be sure to post your success after you take the Kaplan Exam!:yeah:

sle80,

Did the science portion cover only physiological processes? Were there any processes covered more than others?

nbd0001,

I have not taken the Kaplan Exam yet. I will be taking the test in October! The only science information that I know to study is what all the others have posted. Mainly I think it will be important to study all the body systems. Sorry I am not much help, since I have NOT taken the test yet! If I did, I would be happy to share any and all information that I could. Like one poster had said....we nursing students are like golfers; are competition is with ourselves, and as nursing or pre-nursing students we should help each other out; like a team of professionals should! When are you taking the Kaplan? :)

I'm sorry, I meant to ask sbrook5 about the science portion.

SBROOK5, what's your advice on preparing for the science portion? Are there any body systems that seemed to be tested on more than others?

SLE80, I take the test in October as well. If I find out more about the exam before October, I will definitely let you know!

Great! Any help or advice is greatly appreciated by anyone willing to share:yeah:

I posted on another thread about my experience with this exam. I was frustrated because I couldn't find any information on this exam either and in fact, I thought I was studying for the NET until the day before my test!

My advisor said the test is about 2 years old and because it's so new, Kaplan hasn't given them a "norm" yet as far as test scores go. She did, however, say that at our school, the average is about 73%. My school is giving points based on the score of each section since they haven't received any standards from the test makers.

The math, writing, and reading were basic and fairly easy and you get a link to a calculator to use on the exam for the math portion. The science is what I found hardest and I think it helps to have taken both A&P I and II before you take it. I don't think the study guide covered enough considering how specific it was. I've only taken A&P I so we haven't gotten to systems yet, but I was still able to get a 14/20 on that portion (70%). I'm upset with myself because of course you want to do best on the science. My over all score was 85 though, so I hope I'm still in the running for the spring program considering the average at our school has been about 73! We find out this month.

Lorilou221,

Would you suggest anything specifically to prepare for the writing section?

Were there any type of math problems that you were not expecting to see on the exam?

The school that I am applying to had a cutoff score of 73 to be admitted, so it sounds like your school had similar results.

I'm sure you will get in with an 85%. Congrats!

Hi ndb0001,

No, all the math problems I saw on the exam were covered in the study guide. Nothing unexpected and nothing as in depth on my test as I saw in the study guide either, so the test was much easier. I think someone else mentioned it was like adding numbers with decimals and stuff like that. I ended up with an 84 on writing, 89 on math and 91 on reading (and the yucky 70 on science...bleh). The writing was simple grammar. Things like which sentence can be taken out of this paragraph because it doesn't belong or which sentence makes the paragraph seem repetitious or which sentence has a word spelled wrong, stuff like that. It's not much that you can really study for, which is, I guess, why they don't really have a section on it in the study guide.

No grats yet, I'll find out later this month. Keeping my fingers crossed! :)

Good luck on yours!

I took the Kaplan test today. I found it much simpler than the Kaplan study guide. No chemistry, physics, geometry, or any real complex math at all. The math was pretty basic- decimals, percentages, and lots and lots of fractions. I think all of the questions were in story format. There is a link to a basic calculator that we were allowed to use.

Science was all anatomy and physiology. Reading comprehension was as presented in the study guide.

I was a little annoyed when I had a whole section on writing that the Kaplan study guide didn't cover AT ALL. In the writing section there were a couple questions on spelling, which the Kaplan guide spends a lot of time on, but most of it was grammar and essay structure.

In studying for this test, I wouldn't really recommend the Kaplan guide. A Cliff Notes book on basic math and anatomy and physiology I think would be sufficient, as it's hard to really study for reading comprehension and writing.

I personally found that I had PLENTY of time to complete the test. They allot 3 hours and I finished easily in 2.

My school counts the over all score and the math score. This is the first year they've used the Kaplan test (they used TEAS before). They said so far the average score is in the 80s. I got a 91% over all and 93% on the math, so I'm pretty happy. I find out in Oct whether or not I got in. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm hoping to take the Kaplan for NCTC as well...are you for sure going to be able to sit for the test? I'm waiting to see if anyone with 9 points is able to sit yet...good luck to you

It's been awhile since I have been on the message board, but I wanted to see if anyone has recently taken the Kaplan nursing entrance exam and what they thought about it, particularly the science portion?
