Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Weeelllp,

After a long hiatus from school, I (unofficially returned in fall 13') but will be returning full time in spring 2015...yayy!!! Couldn't be more ecstatic about it.

Anyways, I am getting ever so closer to finishing up my pre-reqs so I can start applying into nursing schools. But a few things to keep in mind, I have been in/out of school since 2006. The only classes I really have to take are microbiology, and anatomy and physio II. I will be taking those two classes next year, but on top of that I will be taking some additional courses for some other programs that I looked into. One of the nursing school advisors recommended that I retake chemistry (I got a C in it about 6 yrs ago), I did take the next level chemistry up from that and miraculously ended up with a B in the course but they unfortunately do not take that course into consideration since it is not a pre-req. Evidently, I am a little nervous about the entrance exams and will need to brush up on my math/chemistry. I am thinking of retaking chemistry and college algebra as well. I got an A in college algebra but I regret to say that it was about 7 years ago when I took it and....although I am sure I will remember it once we go through the material again, it has been a long time since I have touched anything math related.

So as of now, my schedule is this: Microbiology, Anatomy and Physio II, human patho, college algebra, sociology. I will not be working as of December of this year because my main focus will be school. I am not particularly nervous about how well I will do because I am fairly confident that I can handle this coursework, but I just wanted some opinions to go along with it. Both the human patho and sociology courses will be online and if I can squeeze a chemistry course in there I will go ahead and do that, if not....I plan on taking it in the summer time to get it knocked out of the way.

What do you guys/gals think?

Yay....nay....crazay?

I'm sure those classes are do-able in one semester, but it's slightly crazy. I'd split them in into 2 semesters instead of trying to complete them all at once. That way you won't be TOO stressed out and you'll most likely be more successful. There's no point in rushing to finish every thing at the risk of receiving bad grades.

Why on earth would you retake a class you got an A in? The math you will do in nursing school is nothing harder than Algebra I. Retaking college algebra is a waste of time and money. Last fall, I took micro, A&P II, algebra I, English comp, and a student success class. It was work but got all A's. You can do it.

I was retaking the class simply because I need to get a refresher....but perhaps looking back on it now...you are right it is a waste. I need to retake chemistry though. That C grade...blegh.

I was in the same boat last year and I let the excitement of being back in school and wanting to be a nurse push me into a heavy load of classes in my first semester back! Not smart! It was a rude awakening. I was not anticipating the amount of material work required, but I was also working full time, so if you're not going to be working, you should be fine.

You're looking at, what, 17 credit hours? That's a tough semester without considering both Micro and A&PII.

First, drop the Algebra. Dosage and calculations in nursing school will be the only refresher you need.

Second, I would encourage you to split up the rest of the classes into two semesters if possible. Pre-req GPA is a big deal, too big to rush through them in order to get into nursing school one semester earlier. I was looking at an 18 hour semester of pre-reqs, and was glad I ended up splitting them up, because one particular class kicked my rear and required triple the amount of study time that I anticipated.

I was able to squeak out all A's, which guaranteed me an immediate spot in my program. Had I received a couple B's, I may have been on the wait list for an extra semester or two.
