Financial Aid Question

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I will start taking prerequisites in the Fall for a second degree in nursing. I didn't max out on financial aid when I was in undergrad but I used a lot of it for my certification in teaching (which was at the graduate level). I need some advice: 1) do you think that I can/should use financial aid for the prerequisites? I am looking at a year of taking classes. 2) does anyone know what resources I can use to finance for this time and nursing?Currently, I am a teacher, married with a 1 year old. I am real concern about having to pay out of pocket with so many other expenses.

You should talk to the financial aid office at the school. I don't think anyone on here will be able to answer those questions since fin aid varies by state, school, and situation. Since you already have an undergrad, you will not qualify for pell grant. At my school, there are more fees with NS and the books are more expensive. If that is the case, I would save the fin aid for the most expensive part.

I agree...you need to talk to financial aid at your school and see what you're actually eligible for before you can decide what you're going to use. Technically, once you have a certain number of credits, the government cuts you off from any and all financial aid, loans included, unless you win an appeal Not all schools have enforced this rule in the past, but more and more programs are being pressured into complying.

Scholarship "season" will open up in the fall, and there should be some things you can try to qualify for, but I think most are for nursing students, not pre-nursing students, but don't quote me on that.

If you do qualify for financial aid but don't have enough, I would save it for NS as the PP suggested. You can go as slowly as you need to and rent books in pre-reqs. NS is a whole different level of expense. Also, since you aren't garuanteed admission to NS, prereqs are more of a gamble to take out loans for.
