EKG/ Phlebotomy Courses in Florida

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

So I live in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and have almost completed my CNA training. I spoke to someone who works at Memorial Hospital and they told me that they only hire PCA/PCTs, which means that in addition to a CNA certification, I'd also need an EKG/ Phlebotomy certificate. She told me that the courses are generally pretty short, but I really can't seem to find many schools that offer them! Atlantic Vocational Tech's program is a few months long and about $2000! I really can't afford that right now.

I found this one place called Critical Concepts (http://www.criticalconceptsusa.com) that offers a Phlebotomy course for $145 and its only one class from 9am-5pm. They also offer a Basic EKG course and a 12 Lead EKG course for $100-$125 and they're also one day courses.

I don't want to spend the money and take the course only to find out that they aren't legitimate certifications. What do you guys think? And whats the difference between the Basic EKG and the 12 Lead EKG? Any information or opinions would be appreciated! Thanks!

lai03, thanks for the tip. I have a few friends who graduated in December 2012, took NCLEX & passed 1st time end of February. Surely they have started looking for work?! yet nobody has mentioned this fact to me til now.

As far as phlebotomy, the odd part is that maybe I incorrectly assumed that drawing blood is like inserting an IV? One RN I recently spoke to during my hospital rotation says no. I still think a new RN has to "hit the vein". Preferably the 1st try. I have had one opportunity to try to do an IV start and missed the vein my first try. I'd like to be able to do this type of task competently.

Further, I'm big on heart/lungs as a high priority. So being able to read EKG's is important to me.

The short study we did in Med Surg class was inadequate in my opinion.

Did you end up taking this class? I'm in the same boat as you!

Call Delray Medical Training.. the have the pct program for under 1500.00. They are the best

I know this thread is old, but if anyone happens to still have this same question (like I recently did), then here you go:

If in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area, you can get HHA, CNA, Basic EKG and/or Basic Phlebotomy at CENTER FOR CAREER TRAINING. It's located in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. Google it for the address/website. They have day/night classes, and they're amazing teachers; not to mention extremely affordable. I'll list the prices of each below.

Basic Phlebotomy (32 Hours) - $295. It's a two week course, and the classes are Monday-Thursday. (day or night)

Basic EKG (16 hours) - $170. It's a one week course, classes are Monday-Thurday. (day or night)

HHA/CNA (75 hours for HHA, and an additional 20 hours clinical to also be a CNA; so that's 95 total for CNA) - $640 for CNA, not sure about the price of HHA alone. HHA is 5 weeks of Monday-Thursday classes, and CNA is just one additional week after that (Monday-Thursday, day or night).

The phone number for this school is: 954-731-7475. Hope someone finds this helpful! I know I had a really hard time finding a place to get all of these certifications, for a reasonable price, in a short amount of time. I got all of the above mentioned certifications in 9 weeks! And just a little over a $1,000 bucks. Not too bad! And the teachers are very helpful/informative. They make learning fun, so it's not stressful at all!

Hello, I plan on going to that school starting on Monday for the phlebotomy program and then after I was going to do the CNA/HHA. Have you been able to find a job after doing the program? I am still a little bit skeptical about the school.
