CSUSM Spring cohort 2010

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

hello,

I'm new to allnurses but I was wondering if anyone on the forums got accepted to CSUSM's spring cohort for 2010. I know that the cohort has recently been canceled because of school budget cuts, but I wanted to know if anyone was interested the meeting up and signing a petition or writing a letter to the university's president regarding the situation. My friend and I both got accepted and are planning on meeting with the nursing adviser soon. We both find it unfair that the school would send us acceptance letters and then inform us that the cohort is now canceled and that we would have to apply again next year without any gaurentee of being accepted.

I was accepted and was crushed when i got the email today. It sucks, but I feel like it's beyond our control. I'll just have to re-apply again for next years program. I don't know why they can't do what Humbolt State is doing and charge double tuition. If you do the math, paying double to tuition would be better than waiting another year to re-apply and MAYBE get in. Maybe you could give them that suggestion when you meet with the advisor. Otherwise, I'd be happy to sign your petition, though I'm quite sure it won't matter. There were 30 students admitted to Fall 09 and 30 students in Spring 2010, and 14 from spring got taken out and added into fall, so there's only 16 of us left.

You could PM me if you want, but let me know how it goes after your meeting.

Thanks for the reply. It really sucks but we don't want step down without a fight. I've had to argue with them when they miscalculated my points and rejected me from both spring and fall. My friend and I both don't have the time to wait another year. I agree with you about double charging. I would rather be charged double tuition then wait and I'll definitely suggest that to to the person I am meeting with on tuesday.

Since the minimum pts of the people getting accepted seemed to increase each year, the chances are that we'll probably find ourselves in the same situation in fall 2010. And I've almost run out of ways to increase my pts. My friend and I are going to try our best to find a way around this, send letters and maybe even beg hospitals and orgs for funding/donations. =P I'll definitely let you know what happens. But just curious, would you happen to know the minimum amt of points of the 14 spring people who got accepted into the fall cohort.

My brother's already in the program Fall 08 Cohort, and he's in the NSA (nursing student association, i think...) and they get newsletters and it said in the newsletter that they added 14 students to the fall cohort from the spring, so I have no idea what the lowest pt score was...

I'm currently crunching numbers trying to find out ways to boost my points. You're also correct about the minimum pts raising, the points i had this year was above the min points of last year, yet I didn't get in...Do you mind sharing how many points you got through AIM or Yahoo, since i have no idea how to private message you on here. My sn on Aim is Sn0brdrblinkchik and on yahoo it's snobrdrblinkchik.

Hi

I am in the same situation. It is quite interesting what it is happening. I am really interested in getting together to sign a petition and find out what was the lowest point of the students from the spring being admitted.

Hi everyone,

I am also one of the students that got accepted to the spring 2010 cohort. I had a meeting with a lady last wk inquiring for the classes I could take for fall semester. In that meeting we have talked about the chances of getting funding for our program. She has told me to hope for the best and keep my hopes up that we are going to get funding for the Spring cohort as we don't really need to a lot to get funded. We have already talked about the consenquences of not getting funding. She has told me that I would have to re-apply if we lose the funding for spring. I told her that it seems unfair for me and for all of the students that we have to go through the same process again considering that we have met their criteria and cut-off. She told me that this is how the system works. We don't even have a lot of options except to re-apply or do the accelerated program. We can't even trasfer to other state school for spring as transfers are unavailable.

I asked her if I could write a petition with the students who are going to be in the spring cohort to lobby for funding. She told me I could but she can't give out the names of the people who are in the Spring cohort for confidentiality.

Now, a week later we all find ourselves receiving a letter of disappointment and rejection. I am really crushed as well because I know that everyone who have been accepted to the spring cohort deserve at least a guaranteed spot for fall 10 if all else fail for spring sem.

I am encouraging everyone, especially those who were accepted to csusm spring 2010 cohort to help us write and sign a petition so we may get the quality of education we deserve.

One more thing, I am aware that 10 additional people were added to the fall semester as she told me the day of our meeting. The cutoff point was 50. Did someone say they have accepted another 14 instead?

Yes, I heard that they accepted 14 students from the spring cohort. I've emailed someone to see what the official cut off is and hopefully will hear from her soon. I hardly see why they couldn't fight for more funding being that there's only 16 of us left and an entire semester to find more funds. It feels like they just gave up on us. =/

Hi Everybody

Thank you for your courage to stand up and get to the bottom of this. I am glad to know I am not the only who find this extremely interesting. I want to ask you all, by any chance any of you have a sencond degree alreary? Or are very close of obtaining a second degree? And did they offer you to , encourage you to apply to the accelarated school, telling you it might be better for you than the traditional bsn, since you alreday have a bachelor or are getting ready close to get one? I am want to see if we share a pattern here.

Thank you :)

Please let us know if she email you what is the official cut off

Thanks for replying, monica. The lady there has suggested to me to get a degree in another field but I am nowhere close to getting another degree. In fact, it would probably take me 2 more years to get one seeing how impacted all the classes are. I've always believed that nursing was the perfect field for me and I would dread to switch to Kine or Human dev like most prenursing students at sm do. Do you already have a bachelors degree in another major?

friendly staff reminder.......

please do not post names of instructors or school officials on the public board as it is against the terms of service (rules of the site) that you all agreed to upon registration. please refer to the following:

no potentially libelous information about specific schools, instructors, or health care facilities/entities should be posted in these forums. while it is important to be able to network, everyone should be mindful of the following:

  1. it is a small world - when we narrow it down to a state and throw in some personal info, there is actually a pretty good chance someone may recognize you if you are not careful. your privacy is paramount to us.
  2. while allnurses.com is a wonderful place to vent (without excess personally identifiable details) it is not the place to express why ("x" specific person, place or program) is terrible. gripe away, but since we cannot permit allegations to be made about named entities, your care in not naming them is very much appreciated.
  3. please do not give out personal information about others. do not name names where anyone could identify the person in any facility including your nursing programs.

I have a double major, and I am really close to finishing my second degree , so I wanted to see if there is trend here, the "lucky" 16 ones have a BA already and they want us to join the accelarted program instead of the generic one.
