Confused about nursing program Gpa requirements

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all :) I'm new to this site and I am hoping to finally get some answers to a question I have been extremely confused by. Ill start off by saying I am currently an undergrad studying psychology. Over all I have a low Gpa (2.6) due to a bad semester caused by severe anxiety and depression. I love psychology but its not what I want to do the rest of my life so I have been looking into going to nursing school. I plan to start at a community college, where I will take the remainder of my pre-reqs for the professional phase (clinicals and such). The professional phase only requires a 2.5 Gpa to get in, but I will have to transfer to another college or university to finish my bsn. Many programs require a 3.0 to a 3.5 for transfer admissions. Do these programs look at major Gpa (just courses used toward the program) or overall Gpa? I really want to go to nursing school, becoming a nurse just feels so right, but I'm scared my current Gpa is going to hold me back. Any feedback is very much appreciated, I haven't been able to get a clear answer to this and I'm not sure where to turn.

For a bachelors degree in nursing (BSN) they will look at your cumulative GPA. The 2.5 GPA they advertise is just the requirement for your application to be LOOKED at. BSN schools generally only accept people with GPA's around 3.4 and above. There is also a pre admissions test involved in the application for ALL nursing programs. It will include math, science, grammar, and reading. In your case your GPA is probably not going to get you into a BSN program. It would take up too much time to redo all the courses you did bad in. Instead, apply to an Associates Degree in Nursing program (ADN). This can be done and your local community college. They will take the GPA of only your prerequisite courses and your pre admissions test scores. You will still have your RN license in the end as long as you pass the NCLEX. You just won't have a bachelors. You will just have to take an RN to BSN program later to have your bachelors (which will get you a better salary and job). Hope this helps!

There are some programs that do only look at prereqs gpa though. I will be applying for a BSN program here that bases it off of your prereq GPA and your TEAS V score.

It would take 4 semesters online (56 credits) to

obtain bachelors degree.

Add 60 credits preq's , the best Gpa I could have

would be 3.5.

That would be two years heavy course load.

Then I could apply to two year ABSN and hope to get in.

I don't like idea of taking more computer programming courses. Seems counter productive.

Taking prerequisites then trying for bsn programs is best choice with adn as second option.

Any good reason to change AAS to BS computer science?

Hey everyone, I seriously need some help. So, I am finishing my BA in December, and my plan was to go to grad school to get my MSW but I have having second thought. When I look back, all my jobs as been in the healthcare industry. I was a personal care assistant for 5 years and now I am a direct care worker. I have going to get my certificate in patient care technician in the fall. I transfer to the university that I am now. My previous college I left there with a 3.12, but when I came to my current university although they accepted my credits but not the gpa. I had to start all over with 0 gpa. I am only last semester of school and my gpa is a 2.5. The only pre-requisite for nursing I would need is A&p II, Microbiology and Chemistry. my question is this. What are my odds of getting in. I don't have the gpa but I have a lot of work experience. Help.

Look for a program that takes work experience into account. Most give a heavier weight to the pre-req GPA than overall, but if you don't have the minimum you won't be accepted.

Like others have said, the programs may require a minimum GPA of 3.0 or whatever, but in reality only sutdents with much higher GPAs are those actually accepted. You aren't trying to hit the minimum GPA, you are competing against all the other applicants for a very limited number of spots.
