Chances of acceptance into BSN program?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hello all. First time user on this site to I apologize if Im not in the correct place. I have some questions regarding getting accepted into a BSN program. First I should give you a little background info.

So my first couple years of college i bombed pretty bad. Even put on academic probation. Partially due to the fact i had no idea what i wanted to do when i got to college and didn't find something i was passionate about til after the fact and also because my father was diagnosed with cancer shortly after. After a long uphill battle i have finally got my cumulative up from a 2.3 to a 3.1 with my nursing prerequisites barely over a 3.0. With that said, what do you think my chances would be of getting into a BSN program? I should also note that due to the university rules, I can't retake the beginning classes since I have a C. But all the upper level courses like genetics, physiology, developmental psych, and stats are all A's. I only have anatomy left to take as far as prerequisites go. Im getting my cna this summer and there are two highly regarded professors at my university that said they would be more than willing to write me a letter of recommendation. Also live in WA if that helps.

A couple other minor questions to add. I only have one more year before i graduate with a major in biology. If that happens and i still don't get in would I still be able to apply to the BSN program or is that solely for undergraduates?

And my last question, there were some retakes along the way. Some non nursing related and some nursing. Even though I got a better grade the second time, the first "poor" grade is still being counted against me on my transcript/gpa. I've heard others talk about if I were to apply to a different university program, they sometimes take out the first grade and only accept the better one therefore altering my gpa slightly. Is this true or just false hope?

Thanks again for reading this and any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi there! I live in Oregon so and I applied to many programs in Washington too. First let me se welcome to AN! I credit this site for getting me in to my BSN program. I will be starting at OHSU in the fall.

If you have a previous bachelors it will give you an advantage when applying to BSN programs. Even though it is not required most people I have met in my cohort have a bachelors degree in a non nursing fuels already.

I wasn't accepted with a 3.67 Prerequisite GPA so I was able to retake classes at a different university and got my Prerequisite GPA to a 3.91. I know university of Washington is one of the most competitive programs in the nation so you need to get your GPA to apply to that school. Most other BSN programs post there average GPA for each admitted class. It is usually between 3.7-3.9 in Oregon and Washington so I would shoot for something in there.

Having your CNA is also important, some schools including OHSU require you to have 1000+ hours in order to earn extra points on the application so once you get your certificate start working with it right away!

I know most BSN programs in the area will not even look at your application if you submit letters of recommendation but I know it was required for one Washington school.

I had a 2.9 after my associates, I had to retake my prerequisite at a community college to boost my prerequisite GPA sense my university would not let me retake anything I had Bs in. So it can be done! Just stay determined, it took me 6 years total from when I began my journey with no college classes!

Good luck!

Oh and I'm on my iPhone so excuse my mistypes!

Once you graduated, I would also apply to ABSN programs also. It will provide more chances at getting in.
