Can any of the prerequisites (biology) be taken online?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I know it's alongshot but I thought I would ask anyway. Are there any places prereq's can be taken online and transfered?

Yes! The only problem with trying to transfer credits is that some schools only accept certain courses. Contact the school you will be transferring too and ask them specifically what courses transfer from what school. I have taken a micro biology course through my community college online. So it is doable, however I wouldn't recommend taking A&P online, because it is a very hands on course. Also some school still require online classes to go to a testing center to take tests and quizzes, so make sure you ask any school you are looking at if this is a requirement.

You can definitely take a lot of the prereq classes online for transfer. As long as you've taken them at a fully accredited school, you shouldn't have difficulty transferring them in to your program.

Biology however can be difficult. Many of the online classes only offer 3 credit BIO courses (without lab), and most nursing programs I looked into during my journey required 4 credit BIO classes with lab. There are however some threads on this site where people have made recommendations for online BIO classes that should transfer. Just search "online BIO" on this site. I managed to take an online Chem course with lab that transferred into my program with no problems. But as always, the only way to find out for sure is to find a class you think might work out, and then ask an adviser at the school you want to transfer into to confirm whether or not they will accept the class. Good luck! :)

Many schools will say that they don't accept online pre-reqs, specifically for the science courses. So they may not accept Bio, MicroBio, A&P, etc. Now if you take it at a school near you, they won't necessarily know. Many of them are aware of what schools offer online sciences and also if you don't live in the state where the school is at, then they'd know as well.

Check out Edukan - I am currently taking their online microbiology course (consortium of six junior colleges in Kansas). There is a virtual lab which is pretty amazing, and I know they offer other science courses. So far, I have been impressed with the course (I am just starting week three of 12 weeks). You have to enroll under one of the six colleges, and my understanding is that your transcript would come from that college (as opposed to Edukan).

I took both microbiology and physiology with labs online with University of New England, and was accepted into a highly competitive MSN-Entry program. I called the school first to make sure they would accept those courses.

I'd assume each program is different, do definitely call the schools you are interested and ask them specifically.

Hey Maseca,

I'm planning on taking some online science courses with UNE. Any pointers?

Thaaaanks,

Katherine
