2nd Bachelor's in nursing NYC

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi there,

I'm a recent graduate of a BA in Communications. I started out my undergrad in nursing and because I wasn't really ready for such an intense program (my head wasn't in school at the time), I switched my major freshmen year.

Now after working a few PR corporate jobs, I realized I want to go back to nursing. I've gotten my head back together and ready to study. I gave up without even giving nursing a chance and very much regretting it now. I live in NYC (if that helps)

What would be the best available option for this? Since I switched freshmen year, I don't have any pre-reqs done. Would it be possible to apply for a BSN program like a senior in HS to do the whole undergrad over? (

I would encourage you to first contact the programs in which you are interested to determine what pre-requisites you need. Then, take them at a community college - at a pace that will allow you to maximize your GPA. Note: If you do not have a high GPA from your previous degree, you will have to make very high grades to ensure that your GPA is competitive for admission to the program you want.

It's not going to be a rapid process and there are no real shortcuts. So-called "accelerated" programs will include the same amount of course/clinical... but squeeze it into a shorter time frame. Best of luck to you on your educational journey.

Hello! I was in a similar situation, except I did not want to go into nursing until I was almost done with my bachelor's degree in psychology. Now, I am in an accelerated bachelor in nursing program. These programs are specifically designed for people who already have a bachelors degree. Look into some of these programs unless you want to go through another four years of undergrad! NYU has a great program, I applied there as well. My advice is that you start taking those prerequisites ASAP at a community college if this is what you really want!

I agree about jumping on those prereqs. From there, start researching accelerated BSN programs in your state, and see what they require. You can also do a traditional BSN program if you choose- I had several people in my class who had a prior bachelor's in something.

I would suggest looking into accelerated nursing programs (they terminate in a BSN) or second degree BSN programs. I'm in a similar situation. I am graduating with a degree in Sociology this year from a SUNY. I applied to a CUNY school as a second degree student (it has an accelerated program that I am aiming to get into.) As a second degree student, I will be taking my pre-reqs (taking pre-reqs as a matriculated student means that tuition is cheaper if you are a resident of NY for most schools) and during my last semester of completing my pre-reqs I will be applying for admission into the accelerated nursing program. At this school there is also an option for a 2 year nursing path for those that already have a degree. If I don't get into the accelerated program, I will take that that path instead, but I think it is likely that I will get into the accelerated program.
