Michigan ICU Experience

I still have 1 year left of nursing school, but I hope to be a CRNA someday. I know it might be early to be thinking about this, but I am trying to figure out which hospital I want to work in when I graduate.

I live in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area and I would really like to be in a SICU or MICU. The hospitals I am looking into now are the University of MIchigan and Henry Ford.

Any suggestions? Would I get better expereince at one or the other? Is there a hospital in the area that I am overlooking?

You want a facility that has an excellent CVICU. That is the best type of unit for experince, it will give you some of everything that they are looking for in terms of your accpetance to a program.

You are definitely overlooking St. Joes in Ann Arbor (located actually in Ypsi). They have a fabulous and very progressive cardio-thoracic program, some fantastic docs, as well as anesthesiologists.

Size of the facility doesn't make a difference, but what you will actually learn there will. Beaumont in Royal Oak also has an outstanding program.

I am originally from Toledo,OH. I am familar with some the hospitals in that area. U of M has a renowed hospital. From what I have heard there are some disadvantages to working there, parking, and paying for parking, it is a union hospital. Advantange they do alot of unique procedures that no one else does in the region. Looks good on you application. No anesthesia program. Beaumont hospital would probably my choice of hospitals to work at in that area. Good location, nice hospital, good reputation, good programs, and anethesia program affliation. You have so many options in that area. Detriot Recieving is big in trauma, and Henry Ford Hospital.

I have classmates who went to work in various ICU's at U of M as new grads. The SICU doesn't take new grads except for those who have worked there during school (as techs). Even they don't all get in--last summer there were 2 techs graduating, and only one opening. It would provide great experience, but don't overlook the other ICU's at U of M or starting in an ICU at another hospital and transferring to U of M. And--it's just my opinion--but I think everyone should have a minimum of 2 yrs ICU experience before starting a CRNA program, unless they're an experienced nurse. There's just so much to learn....
I agree, If you can't get into to SICU, I suggest a MICU or CTSU/CVICU to get ample experience with swan ganz caths and multiple gtts.
