Vanderbilt MSN 2018

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Hi! I'm starting a thread for Fall 2018. Anyone else applying too? Please comment!

I'm applying to the prespecialty dual WHNP/AGPHNP! Would anyone mind sharing how much overlap you had in your responses to the essay questions and your statement of purpose? Were you able to avoid repeating yourself?

That's the question I have right now, writing my responses. Most of the questions they're asking in short responses, I've included in my personal statement for other schools. Does the personal statement just want to know why we are choosing Vanderbilt?

And I think they want you to talk about why your specific specialty too

Hey everyone, just submitted my application for CNM prespecialty recently. Can't wait to hear back!!

Hi everyone! I am considering applying for the PreSpecialty MSN program at Vanderbilt. However, I noticed on the Vanderbilt website that the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Acute Care specialty is not available for those who undergo the PreSpecialty track, which is ultimately what I would like to pursue. Is anyone aware of any way around this? Such as completing the PreSpecialty year, then taking a year to gain experience as an RN, and returning to the program? I am assuming that is not an option considering I could not find anything about it online, but I was wondering if any of you had any insight? I figured I might as well ask :)

Thanks, y'all!

I recently came across this program as well.

From what I've read, we don't need to have the pre-req courses completed in order to apply, we just have to have them done before beginning the program if we get accepted, correct? I want to apply PNP-Primary. Also, is anyone going to the Open House on Saturday?

Hello all-

I am currently a specialty PMHNP student at VUSN (entered the program with a BSN). Please feel free to ask me any questions. Good luck with your applications!

I've been reading that the essays/statement of purpose can make or break your application. What approach did you take with the essays?

Also, who wrote your letters of recommendation?

Finally, it is alright if you don't have all the pre reqs completed as long as they will be completed before starting the program? (Pre specialty)

1. I spent a considerable amount of time writing/tweaking my essays to make sure that they reflected my personality, my reasons for wanting to become an NP, and my goals once I become an NP. In other words, your responses need to go beyond just "I want to become an NP to help people." Your responses, ESPECIALLY your statement of purpose, should also demonstrate that you understand what your scope of practice will be as an NP will be and that you will be apart of a multidisciplinary team.

2. A professor from my BSN program, an NP that I shadowed, and a work supervisor.

3. Yes, it is okay to apply without having all the prereqs completed as long as you provide them with the plan you have for completing them before the program starts. I am not a pre-specialty student, but I assume you would do this during your interview. Or maybe there is a section in the application where you can write it in?

Hope this helps. Any other questions, just leave them here.

Thank you, gaj418!

Does anyone know if the letters of rec need to be 1 page or 2? Single or double spaced?

Does anyone know the average GRE scores of previously accepted cohorts? I'm really stressed about it! I know the minimum they are looking for, just curious about a rough estimate/average of scores from previous students. Also, does anyone know what is considered a competitive score for FNP programs? I haven't found a ton of info about it, but I'm curious what competitive scores look like.

Lastly, does anyone know how to answer the "what do you understand about your specialty scope of practice" short answer essay? I don't know how to answer it without sounding like a google search result... Thanks!

73rd percentile reading, 51 quant, and 60 writing are common GRE scores.
