Summer Entry 2012 Accelerated BSN Johns Hopkins

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Okay I have searched far and wide to find a topic relating to this but have only found older ones... I mean come on guys the world isn't really going to end December 2012. :yeah: So here's to the 2012 application cycle!

I have a ton of questions for those who are applying and those who have applied and those who are in the program. Any and all input will be much appreciated. Also just so you know, I will be attending the October 1st open house.

If I were to describe myself, I would say grade-wise I am not the strongest candidate for JHU's nursing program as it is considered top in the nation. HOWEVER I have great experience and recommendations to cancel that out. I am also trying really really hard to make those essays seem great but only 300 words?

So to anyone reading this post, what do you think I can do to make myself a stronger applicant?

Relating to specifically JHU, I have heard a million different things about their program. From "it really sucks and is not worth it" to "best program EVER". JHU is supposed to be a school that is the leader in research and also has a global perspective. Can anyone else tell me what is so special about JHU's nursing program? What is your personal experience with it?

As far as location and campus, I think it doesn't matter as long as the educational program is incredible.

p.s. You are awesome for reading my novel. There have been many a times where I skipped over long posts. :coollook:

I just called JHU SON and the person I spoke with said that the applicants are being notified more or less in the order that their application was received. So, it's possible we just submitted ours later...I hope. It does sound like you only get the phone call if you're accepted. Otherwise it's a letter in the mail :-/

Being a Baltimore native, I can also attest to the fact that there are lots of places to rent... So out-of-towners, don't let that stress you out too much. With Baltimore being such a huge mecca for college students, there is a pretty good stream of turn-over/vacancies, etc. I would agree that Canton, Federal Hill, and Fells Point are generally pretty "safe" areas. Baltimore is not particularly "cheap" in terms of housing, so if the price looks too good to be true, it very well might be. Be very careful about renting a place within walking distance of Hopkins itself. There are probably some definite exceptions to that rule, but if you're looking in that area, DEFINITELY see it first.

Ppuri... my parents will be attending accepted applicants day with me, too... they were really interested in going and I figured, sure, why not? Having "been there, done that" with college once already, the temptation of "looking cool" is rather pointless at this stage in the game. lol. At least for me ;)

Compared to where I live, Baltimore is looking pretty cheap. My husband and I are hoping to find a townhome with a small yard for $1700/month or less. I'll definitely look in Canton but not sure if Federal Hill or Fell's point would be able to offer that?

@ Carolina... awesome. Yeah, I figured it would be ok. I just was not sure if it was a common thing or not...I think she will end up coming with me anyway. I am going on April 20, so I figured we could make it a mini vacay :0)

Stoked about the availability of places... I will definitely check those spots out. Thanks!

Has anyone who has heard back been accepted into the MSN portion as well?

leenak, I'm by no means an expert on real-estate in Baltimore...however based on my experience I haven't seen many grassy yards in Canton, Fells or Federal. Now, your definition of "yard" may be "outdoor space that is primarily concrete with 1 sofa-size flower bed" and if that's the case, then yes, there's plenty of that. Most of the yards in those areas are big enough for a patio table, chairs and grill...and that's about it...which of course might be very desirable because there's not much maintenence involved in that!

If you're truly looking for a grass yard, I'm not exactly sure... I think Charles Village might be a good place to look for that??

I went to an open house and the guy who talked to us said you can apply for the MSN program at any point when you are in the BSN. He said they sometimes prefer this because it may take you a little while to figure out exactly what you want to specialize in. He also said that it is much easier to do that, than to get accepted into the combined BSN/MSN then decide you want to be in a different specialty.

Awesome! I just asked this through the online chat. But this clarifies in more details. Hopefully, I like Baltimore enough to be willing to stay a few more years to work and for my masters!

Has anyone received a phone call/rejection letter in the past few days? Wondering if they're still coming in, or if I should expect the skinny envelope in the mail any day :( I'm kind of surprised...got accepted to some other good programs, but would have liked to do the MPH on the side, and JHU has a great school of public health. C'est la vie...

I haven't heard anything either. I wonder if they have made decisions on the Masters programs yet?

Hello Everyone,

I just had a visit to Baltimore to look for apartments and check out the city. Baltimore surpassed all my expectation. It is a beautiful city and the people are very friendly. I love the historic and artsy charm of the city. The medical campus is breath taking and feels like a mini city all to itself. There is so much to see and do that I cannot wait for March orientation!!

Leenak-Thank you for your restaurant and eatery suggestion. I tried One World Cafe and absolutely loved it!!! I feel like all I did was eat on this trip.

Ppuri,

I checked out four apartments. I saw Chesapeake Commons, Landbank Loft aparments, Gallery Towers, and the Standard apartments. Each of these places had a direct route to Hopkins. The last two (Gallery Towers and The Standard) have a contract with Hopkins which gives Hopkins students automatic approval. There is no security deposit and application fee. They do ask for a check/ visa/mc of $100 but they do not cash it. I cannot remember what this is for. All these places are very nice and are worth checking out. I ended up signing a lease with The Standard apartments. I just fell in love with it. Each of these places have a websites it u want to check it out. The Chesapeake Commons is much better in person than on the website. They are doing rennovations and upgrading appliances, cabnets, floors, carpeting etc. All the places are in safe areas (well safe for city life). I think they are all in Mount Vernon. I really like Mt. Vernon, it is very artsy, charming, historic, with many nice restaurants and shops.

I cannot wait to see all those who wil be attending the March Acceptance Day. I wil be bringing my partner. Maybe we all can go for a drink or something afterwards.

AniLMT and Mellzie22,

I am sure admission is just slow in contacting everyone. I wish you guys the best of luck eventhough I do not think you will need it. I hope that the two of you decided to attend Hopkins. I would love to have you as classmates.

I applied for the summer entry accelerated BSN/MSN program in Midwifery and still haven't heard anything. I interviewed 1/12/12 and turned my app in 11/14/11. I called just now and they said the decisions will be coming out in the next 2 weeks, hopefully before the accepted students chat on 2/24/12.

On another note: Does anybody know how easy it is to get housing just for the summer semester? My fiance graduates in May with his degree in Physical Therapy Assistance but can't start work in Maryland until he is licensed which won't be until the end of July. I was thinking I might come down for the summer and then in the time between summer and fall semesters move into a permanent place with him. Thanks!
