Students who got their NP/MSN online

Have you had trouble finding work at all? I am considering doing an online FNP program but I am worried I won't get a job after since it will be an online degree (even though clinicals are obviously in person) and I don't want to soak a lot of money into something to have it not count.

I have a former NP co-worker (SLU grad) and a current NP co-worker (U. South Ala. grad) who finished online ACNP programs and had no trouble finding jobs. I'm not absolutely positive but I would suppose FNP would be the same way.

Well that is reassuring to hear. Did they have trouble finding clinicals in their area? For me, I already know pretty much where I want to do mine so it may not affect me as much. I've heard good things about USA.

Did employers ask in interviews about the disconnect, ie: you working in X but your school being hours and hours away in Y? Did they care that is was online?

I participated in the interview process leading to the hiring of both the ACNP's I mentioned. When the physicians were looking over their resumes, no one commented on the fact that they graduated from the said schools. I have a feeling the physicians had no idea that the programs they attended were offered in the online format. One physician did comment on one of them for having had a prior MSN from University of Phoenix. He said "isn't that an online school?" I said "probably" as if I didn't know that and then I added, "but look, she's got a post-master's from ___ U.". That was the extent of the conversation about the schools they attended. The physicians focused more on their RN experience when we were discussing whether to hire them or not. Both had strong CVICU nursing backgrounds.

Yeah, I've heard good things about USA myself. Thomas Barkley who is known as a reviewer for ACNP boards used to be a faculty member there.

I think the NP degrees are accepted because of the live clinical component (as you pointed out). Also, some schools with online components require a/occasional campus visit(s). Lastly, many of these schools are large state institutions (such as USA mentions by a previous poster). As long as the school is accredited you should be okay.

I work with several NNPs who received their Masters from an online program at the University of Texas Medical Branch. They had no problems. I am also attending the online program from the same university. I think as long as your degree is from a reputable university you should be fine. Good Luck.
