Nursing Students Post Graduate

Anyone here attend or know anyone that have attended South University's online MSN program. Just wondering how it is and is it a generic Masters degree in Nursing. I am looking at University of South Alabama because from what I here, they are a very reputable nursing school that offers online degrees without having to take the GRE. My ultimate goal is to become a CRNA. However I felt that if I have a MSN first, then I can possible reduce my classes by coming into a Post-Masters Cert. program for nurse anesthesia. Not to mention the fact that it will help show that I can do graduate work since my undergraduate GPA was only 2.96. Any suggestions from anyone?

When I was searching for a graduate school - I did a lot of research on South University. I even called the CCNE to see if they had applied for accreditation because I would not attend a graduate school that was not accredited. The CCNE said they had applied and there was no reason to assume they would not be accredited.

The advisor I spoke too was very helpful and the tuition costs were about the same as the other schools I had explored. In the end I decided to attend Walden University because of its research focus. However, I would consider going to South University if Walden had not accepted me. Good luck.

As for accreditation, one must hold an MSN from a program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) in order to sit for ANCC certification.

So, you should seek a program that is already accredited.

Thank you. I think I will just stick with my first choice, University of South Alabama MSN program.

CCMG, I too am looking into the Univeristy of South Alabama for the FNP program and possibly the post-masters Nurse Educator. I am still in the "gathering info" phase.

Have you found out any specifics on how often you have to go to the actual campus? I'm sure it varies by program.

Thanks.

92MXMOM,

From what I understand and from talking to the school at Univ of South Ala. for the FNP program, the first semester of school, you are required to come to campus for 2-3 days for orientation and quite possible one time at the end of each semester you could be asked to come and take your finals at the school. Now that is for the NP programs. Now the CNS and EDUCATION tracks are completely online, no campus attendance is required. I was considering the FNP, but I think I will change to a track that I can complete in the least amount of time. See, my ultimate goal is nurse anesthesia, I just need a MSN to help boost my GPA, show I can do graduate level work, and possible exempt myself from having to take the GRE or MAT for CRNA school. However, I have heard more and more nurses talking of South Ala and just recently came across to grad students that just started South Ala. this Fall in their FNP program. Piece of advice, if you are considering them, apply very early as I have heard they take only a certain # of students, as with any program, however the ones they don't take just roll their application to the next semester and tend to get priority as long as they meet the admission requirements. Maybe we will have some classes in the future together since right now, they are my first choice.*****CMMG

Hi CCMG. Just thought I'd update you on my "progress" with USA...

I have been emailing and I inquired about...

-APPLICATION DEADLINE OF SEPT 1-I asked X if there was ever and extended deadline for application as I did not know of their school before Sept. She said they don't begin reviewing app's until Oct so YES I could still submit an application--I am working on that right now. Just need to find my varicella titer date and have my doc sign the physical form...& hope my schools don't delay getting transcripts in...If all I need does not make it in time/the spring class fills before my application is complete, they will roll it over until the next semester. In part, that doesn't sound too bad. Although I really want to get started ASAP, if I start in the summer, it's only 1 class! But...we have 2 trips planned in June and with a summer start, I'd have to plan the 3 day trip to AL as well (14 hour drive :uhoh3:~~makes me carsick thinking about it!)

-CAMPUS VISITS--X said yes there is a 3 day orientation at the beginning. And they can require 1-2 visits per semester but they "have not had to do that yet". So I assume it's on a class by class or individual basis, maybe depending on how they are doing???

TITERS/IMMUNIZATIONS-you need to provide dates only, not the actual result--except may TB. You need a 2 step, which I have not had in the past. I will send documentation that I got that done,

I don't recall what exactly I said in previous posts on this thread but I am most interested in teaching and initially wanted to to the Nurse Educator. But I felt that might limit me. So...I'll do the FNP then do the post-masters in education. I figure learning/reviewing all I'll need for the FNP would be a benefit as well to my future students!
