Quit my program

ahh! Many of you have probably read my saga--got into an ANP program, found out after the fact there was a LONG clinical wait. After starting the program I became very overwhelmed and unmotivated. I hate the online format. I made the decision to withdraw from the program this week. I am meeting with the adviser of a traditional on-campus FNP program that I will hopefully start this summer. It is a small program and the core courses are integrated with the clinical courses which I am really happy about.

A few words of encouragement for you: Yes, I tend to do better in an actual class format, possibly because of my age. I'll never be too saavy online, but can get around OK at least (with a little help from my husband). I actually had a little bell to ring when I was working on my masters. That way, he could hear my call for help clear back in his "lab" as we call it. Otherwise, I had to get up from the computer each time to walk to the back of the house, which caused me to lose my place/thought about what was the problem I was asking for help with. Hope you will get along better in a more traditional format, although it may still be very hard and lots of work. Best luck to you and hope you get in!

Sorry to hear that your ANP program didn't work out. At the same time, it's good to hear that you found what didn't work for you which will hopefully lead you to that which will!

I dropped out of my program for a semester last year because I became incredibly overwhelmed with work, school, and personal issues. While it extended my graduation by a whole year, it was the best decision to make. Things are smoother and slightly less stressful (but not by much ;) ).

The point of it is that we do what's right for us as long as our motives are the right ones. The rest will follow.

Good luck!

I just want to wish you luck! I dropped out of my FNP program after a semester and I decided to pursue a master's in health policy instead. I am now much happier and I believe that I've found my path in nursing.

Hi there!

I too switched my track......... I was in the FNP program, but have took the last two semesters off...... I have been in school full time since 2004.... working on my ADN-BSN, then went straight into the MSN program......... talk about BURN OUT! I did some soul searching and realized that I did not want to do the FNP.... so I switched to the ACNP program.....my heart is and always has been in critical care, and cardiology............ the ACNP program has a cardiac specialization.........so hey...best of both worlds! Besides........after doing some clinicals for the FNP.... kids are NOT my thing.

I'm one who does better online (i.e. on my own schedule) but everyone learns differently. My dd is a straight A student but cannot handle any kind of class online. I'm happy for you that you've made a decision. Do you mind sharing exactly what you didn't like about doing it online? I have been considering go back to school online to be a pediatric nurse practitioner. I will probably be ready for retirement by the time I graduate but I enjoy learning.

Thanks everyone.

I do not mind online classes per se. I love the computer! So it never occured to me that I would not like my program (which was online until you reach clinical). I took my stats class online and it was fine. There were many red flags for me prior to starting the program--I just wasn't listening to my gut. It is a very large state university and I have graduated from (two) smaller, private universities. I understand there is a fair amount of BS in all nursing programs, but this was beyond what I expected. The idea of taking years of this online BS before reaching a clinical was more than I could handle. I also hated not receiving any feedback from the professor...just writing and writing all this BS with no feedback, ick.

I met with the advisor of the more traditional FNP program and I think it is a much better fit. I should start in the summer. The program is much more integrated..meaning the BS classes are mixed in with the real thing. Because this university is an "educational" institution v. the other being a "research" institution, their emphasis is different and a better fit for me. This is my last attempt though. If this program doesn't work out, I am done!
