How would YOU interpret this question on an application questionairre?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

I've completed all my application stuff except for this one question which I'm really having problems with:

The University of California, San Francisco is committed to a diverse and inclusive graduate student population. Diversity refers to the variety of experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, culture, religion, mental or physical capabilities, heritage, age, gender, sexual orientation, and other characteristics. UCSF values diversity because it enhances the educational experience, the workplace, and services to the public provided by this campus. Discuss how your personal background informs your decision to pursue a graduate degree. Please include any educational, cultural, economic, family or social experiences, challenges, or opportunities relevant to your academic journey.

The actual question (underlined) is the same thing that is discussed in the goal statement essay & so I don't want to repeat. However, it's obvious they want to know my views on diversity - I'm just having a really painful time trying to pull something together that makes sense..

Thoughts???

Comments???

Ideas???

Thanks!!!!

I don't think they are asking your views on diversity. I think they are asking how are YOU diverse? What in your background etc has led you to where you are? Why should they choose YOU to do the course (ie. what unique features do you possess that they should want)?

I think it is asking your life has shaped your decision to return for grad studies.

How am I diverse? - I think your interpretation of the question is right. That makes more sense than the way I was reading it. Ok, now I needa sit and think for a bit what makes me different I suppose...........

THANKS!!!!!! :yeah:

They might also be looking for motivations that will keep you in the program, reducing the likelihood of a place going to someone who'll drop out part way through

Well I finally pulled something together and sent the whole thing off - Yay! At least I don't have to think about it anymore.

Thanks!!!!

I agree with SteveRN21. As someone who was raised by a single mother, my desire to pursue a graduate degree is partially due to seeing my mother struggle (without a college degree). A graduate degree, hopefully, will provide me with further opportunities. If you are a member of a particular minority group disproportionately affected by a particular malady (and someone in your family experienced it --> African-Americans and Native Americans and diabetes), then that may have influenced your decision to pursue a graduate education in nursing. I think THIS is what they are looking for. GOOD LUCK! I applied to graduate school for September and I am patiently waiting. :nuke:
