Do you think it hinders you (as an NP student) sometimes to work as an RN ?

Now before everyone gets their gander up, try to follow my reasoning:

We've all clearly mastered the technical stuff of foleys, dressings, IV meds and math, etc.

I noticed that when I was working ER I would *frequently* slow down to dig into labs, consider a differential, etc.etc.......and would promptly have to put all of that down in order to slog through the technical stuff that needed to be done. I knew why a certain drug was ordered, but would love to sit down and think out the considerations, indications, contraindications and how they came up with that particular dose. But there is often no time.

I am barely into my NP clinicals, but I have to say that I have to deliberately squeeze out the nurse part of me and focus on advanced assessment skills above and beyond my regular RN skills.

And I won't even start on some coworkers..........:uhoh3:

I know what you're saying. I am wondering the same thing when I start my NP clinicals this August. I am so used to doing certain things, that it is going to feel so weird to help write orders and actually not carry them out by pushing meds, etc. But I can't wait for it to start. I will stop when I'm at work now to ponder a patient situation and will start to think "Hmm...how did they decide to order that specifically?" But no sooner do I think that-I have 3 people calling my name to go into so and so's room for this, that and the other thing-or like today-I had to precept a student RN and a new RN at the same time! Phew! I really can't wait until I start clinicals so I can learn a lot more of the decision making process. :)
