Hi,

I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.

Correct. Columbia does not conduct interviews. You submit your application by November 15th, and they respond in early February. No phone or in person interview. Of the six programs I applied to, it was the only one that had no interview.

Guys those of you with NONE of the prerequisites, how long is it taking to complete them all, I'm getting started on prereqs in Sept so although I know Columbia is my first choice, I doubt Sept to May is long enough to complete those prereqs, I'm from Europe so pretty clueless about the school system here. I'm also married with a child living in Manhattan, so my only other option right now is NYU.

When you say "none" of the prerequisites, does that mean you just need the science pre-reqs (Micro, Anatomy, Physiology, and Psych), or do you really mean ALL of them, including English comp, humanities (2-3 classes), social sciences (1-2 classes), and statistics?

If it's just the science classes you still need, 2 semesters is probably enough, assuming whatever undergrad institution you're attending offers them in those semesters and at times that don't conflict with each other. If you still need the general liberal arts classes as well, you might be setting yourself up for a really, really tough fall and spring. I needed 3 pre-reqs, but I work full time, so I'm completing the first one now, will do the second this summer, and finish up the third this fall before I apply. If I weren't working and could go to school full time, I think it would be manageable to do all three in one semester (assuming A & P were offered at the same time. Most places offer it as a 2 semester series).

Is there any way you could get at least a couple of these out of the way--maybe online?--before September? That might make it a little more realistic to try to get the rest done in two semesters. Nothing is impossible, though! Good luck!

It's the sciences I need and possibly statistics. I already have statistics from the UK but it's over ten years old would have to ask admissions about that. I intend to go to school full time, I'm a stay at hone mom right now. I'm thinking I should try to get nutrition in over the summer then I may have a shot at being ready on time, as for the GRE... I hope I can leave that until the last minute. Getting worried about loans the more I think about it the more I wonder if a Columbia nursing degree is really worth it. I don't see myself getting old in my former job though..

I was admitted into Columbia's ETP class for 2011-2012. I applied for the master's program in anesthesia as well. At first, I was admitted into the BSN portion, but not the MSN for anesthesia. If you are accepted into the ETP program, you are automatically accepted into the MSN for certain specialties, but not all. Anesthesia is not one of the ones you can switch into easily. Recently, I was informed that a spot opened up and that I had been admitted into the CRNA program. I was unable to attend the visiting day or an information session, so I can't give you the statistics on admission.

As for my academics, my grades were not perfect, but I did pretty well (all A's and B's) and my GRE scores for verbal and math were high. I would suggest getting very strong recommendations and having health-related extracurricular activities, such as volunteering at a hospital or teaching CPR classes. Also, while Columbia does not do interviews, you can still get in contact with people on the admissions committee who can answer your questions and might remember you when it comes to admissions time.

I was wait-listed at UPenn, though, so I am not sure how Columbia decides whom to admit.

As for the expenses for the BSN portion, Columbia estimated that the anticipated cost of tuition is 106k for 2011-2012. This includes 70k for actual tuition and 24k for room and board, which is if you expect to live in their dorm housing (which is limited, and priority is given to international and CA/west coast students). I have heard that others who chose to live off-campus were told to expect to pay 36k. Most of the students are eligible for the 25k pre-licensure undergrad scholarship, but the funding for the scholarships is limited and it's a good idea to turn your FAFSA in early (before you are even accepted into the program) and to put your deposit down early if you are accepted. The rest of the funding is through private and federal loans. They might offer you about 25k in federal loans, but the rest is going to be private. The financial aid department so far has not been very helpful.

The bachelor's program is 60 credits and the master's program for anesthesia is 61 credits, but 10 of them will be completed during your BSN education. Since the tuition is by credit, the tuition (not including living expenses) for your one year BSN will be comparable as for the MSN (master's credits are slightly more expensive).

Can you tell me what sort of background you need to be competitive for the CNM program at COlumbia? I am not exactly sure what they are looking for in ETP applicants in this specialty? Do you need a letter from a CNM to be competitive or have worked as a doula? COmpared to other NP programs, I am not sure how I would be competitive for this program, so I would appreciate some feedback from you regarding things to highlight and thoroughly understand about the role and or experiences that are valued as competitive for the program. Do they take people with little experience if they have good grades (GPA) and GRE scores?

Hi! I read somewhere that that Columbia is on a rolling admission, is that true? And..does anyone know why Columbia does not do interviews?

The midwifery and anesthesia specialties are the most competitive, so in my opinion every little bit counts - especially since they don't interview. I think work as a doula or other experience is pretty important, as are GPA and GRE. That said, you still have time to get valuable experience before the 11/15 deadline. Also, a lot of people who apply to CNN or anesthesia will be admitted to the ETP program even though they are denied for their particular specialty. They then choose a "backup" specialty, like womens health, for example.

Also, to the other poster, th ETP program isn't on rolling admissions. There's one deadline, and they get back to everyone at the same time.

Can I ask you how you got a hold of Jose and is he the main person to direct our admissions questions to? Also, if you happen to have the contact information for the people on admission committee, can you forward that to me? I'm not sure about everyone, but i'm nervous and excited for my first rounds of nursing school apps in the next few months! :nurse:

Hey all!

I'm applying too for the Psych/Mental Health specialty. I'm curious, what other schools is everyone applying to as well? I know I'm definitely going to apply to Yale too, but other than that I'm not really sure where else.

I feel like I definitely need a couple safety schools as these programs are really competitive. Maybe Regis? Northeastern?
