2014 RN Applicants to Yale School of Nursing

Hello :) I am an applicant for the 2014 Yale School of Nursing MSN for RNs (FNP). Does anyone know about how many RNs typically apply/get accepted each year? Are there any spots set aside specifically for RNs? Or, are the only availabilities those that are left over from the previous year (as mentioned in some other threads)? What are the odds of getting accepted if you are granted an interview? And, when do you typically hear back one way or the other? I wonder because most of what I can find related to the program is geared towards GEPN applicants. Thanks in advance!

If you get invited to interview, it means you've at least survived the first sorting of applicants (but I have no idea how many people that get interviews don't end up getting accepted). The last I knew (this was a number of years ago, I don't know if things have changed but I doubt it), experienced RNs were only accepted into slots that were left over after all the previous year's GEPN students had gotten the slots of their choice.

The school is really geared toward the GEPN program; the experienced nurses I've known who have gone in more recent years have ended up feeling they were treated like "red haired stepchildren." I didn't have that experience when I was there, but that was a long time ago. At that time, the faculty I knew were pretty open (at least with me) about their feelings that they didn't particularly like working with the GEPN students and preferred teaching traditional, experienced-RN students -- but I've noticed since then that, for whatever reason, those faculty members are gone and I'm guessing they were replaced with more pro-GEPN faculty.

Welcome to the boards an congrats on the interview! I went through this process as an RN/MSN applicant last year and I know how anxious you can get from waiting for a decision. My first year here at Yale has been pretty busy and at times stressful, but also really fun too!

You are right in that RN's are competing for spots left over from the first GEPN class, although that may vary from year to year, and it's possible that they may add an extra spot or two, but that's just speculation.

I've read on these boards that the program is geared towards GEPN's, although I've never felt any different from my GEPN peers and I really don't know how the professors would know who is an RN and who is a GEPN unless you mentioned it in class or they looked you up specifically for some odd reason. Some of our instructors are MD's or pharmacists, and I can't imagine the whole RN/GEPN thing mattering to them. Perhaps some people have had a different experience, however if you are a generally approachable person, then you should have no issue fitting in here at YSN.

The info I got last year was that about 74 RN applicants applied to the program, and a quarter of them are for FNP. I don't know the applicant stats for the other specialties, but there are a total of 11 RN's in the incoming class with me this year and it breaks down to the following:

- 5 FNP

- 2 Acute Care

- 2 Psych

- 1 Peds

- 1 Midwifery

I'm not sure if the class is larger this year than it was last year. There are approximately 87 or so GEPN's in the '13 incoming class, so if anything it may have decreased because I thought initially the class sizes were ~100 or so. As you can see from the Office of Institutional Research Data sheet, total Yale School of Nursing MSN student enrollment school-wide has decreased from 307 of last year to 280 of this year. Now I know they discontinued certain specialities such as the CNS and oncology NP options, so I'm not really sure if that is what's responsible for the smaller class size or what.

And I have really no idea how many they interview out of the 74, so your guess is as good as mine! Given that some of the other specialties only enrolled 1 or 2 students, some specialties may be substantially more competitive than others. Regardless, they managed to put together a really great group of RN's as they are all really amazing! Class profile-wise, a lot of the RN's in this years cohort have around 2-3 yrs or less of nursing experience (with a few exceptions, with a few with more), with a couple of them coming basically right from BSN graduation with

I have a lot of the same questions as the OP. I'm going to have to make some decisions soon and wonder how long after the interview Yale will get back to me. I applied for Pedi, so looking at the numbers it's going to be tough!

I was notified of acceptance around April 11th last year. Hope this helps!

I have spent all day prepping for my interview. So nervous! I feel like this interview will make it or break it in terms of getting accepted or rejected!

I had my faculty interview on the 28th. I'm curious how everyone felt theirs went and out of those interviewed how many of us get acceptance offers. I truly did not think my app would get so far since I waived the GRE with my previous MSN thesis and my GPA isn't the greatest. Keep us posted!

I had my interview this morning. I thought it went well, but it'd hard to really tell on the phone, in my opinion. I also didn't think I would get this far because Yale is so selective and my GPA isn't great either. My interviewer said it may be up to a month until we hear!

The month wait is horrible. I keep analyzing my answers. The email from admissions though makes it seem like you have a pretty good shot at getting admitted if you had an interview. Fingers crossed!

I had my interview last week. It was hard to tell but I found that my interviewer had a lot of similar interests. Hopefully, that's a good sign?
