UCLA vs HUP/UPenn

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Hi,

I am a new graduate nurse and have received job offers from both UCLA in Los Angeles and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvannia in Philadelphia in their cardiothoracic ICUs. Both are great hospitals that I'd love to work at! And make this one hard choice. I also have plans to get a master's degree, so i would probably attend the graduate school affilitated with the hospital.

UCLA would be a great place to live for a short time as a young adult, it is a great facility and practically the best hospital in the west. HUP would be closer to home since i'm from the east coast and UPenn is also a renowned hospital with a great grad school.

Does anybody have any input on whether one choice may be better than the other? Any advice or opinions would be much appreciated

Thank you =)

If you like to travel and want to live on the West Coast while your young, then I would say go for UCLA. Its not like you have to live there your whole life but its a growing experience and I think its completely than living on the East Coast. However, if your planning on doing your Master and think you need the family support maybe UPENN would be a good place to go. I know myself I would take any opportunity to go somewhere completely new and that way I wouldn't ever regret not going. Why not, you only live once.

Hi! I did a six month internship at UCLA while I was in nursing school. It was a pretty good place to work and I learned a lot. Plus the new hospital should be opening soon I would think and it should be awesome. I am from Philly and it was the first time I ever lived by myself so it was difficult for me in the beginning since I didnt know anyone when I moved out there. I would say I finally got comfortable around the six month mark and unfortunately it was time for me to come back to Philly and finish school. Also the pay difference between UCLA and HUP probably isnt too big of a difference which is kind of a surprise since it is so expensive to live in LA. I am a new grad as well and just started working here in Philly. At times I really miss living in LA and kind of also miss working at UCLA. I would definitely go back but just not by myself lol. But if that really doesnt bother u so much to be alone or if u know people out there then I would say go for UCLA!! If u have any more questions just let me know.:D
