CCAC Nursing Program?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Hi, I'm hoping to eventually enter the nursing program, but I'm curious about a something. Someone had told me before entering, it's best to get all of your co-reqs done for the program, so that only the nursing courses are left. Is this a good idea? If so, you can take all the classes (other than the Nursing courses) without being in the program, right?

One more thing... are the PAX exams hard? Any tips to study for them?:uhoh3:

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am not in the CCAC nursing program, but I am doing my nursing prereqs at ccac, with many people going into the nursing program. I know the people i know have most of the co-reqs done.....most i know because they were/are in my A&P classes, or my micro. From talking to them, most have all classes done, or need only one class....mostly being micro. actually i thought all thier classes were prereqs other then the micro until i looked into ccacs program, so i do think it is very recomended to have most done, and i think having them done (with good grades of course) helps with your applying to nursing program too...especially the A&P.

And yes all courses other then nursing courses you CAN take before you are in nursing

As for pax, i had to take i different test so I cant help with that one, but CCAC does have reveiw sessions for it

Over the summer, I had a clinical instructor that alluded that they are considering making it a REQUIREMENT to have all the pre-req's out of the way. Regardless, getting them out of the way is preferred as the nursing courses are fixed. Basically, they only offer them on certain days/times and they don't always allow options to take the co-req's with ease. You may only have one or two time slots that "fit" with the nursing curriculum and it may not be at the campus you are taking your nursing classes.

I just got accepted to CCAC Nursing for Fall 2011. I already have a degree and only need a two more bio classes.

My daughter is going to CCAC in the fall as well. She wants to do the nursing program. She could have been accepted to the program directly (we were told at advising) BUT luckily the advisor was very astute. She recommended that she NOT apply to the program but take an extra year to do the pre and as many co-reqs as she can. Turns out the advisors spouse was in the program and found it to be very difficult and stressful.

We also received the same information from some others at the school. Some were clueless though and suggested she just "jump" right in.

I dont think 3 years for an economical education getting an RN is bad. We looked at nursing schools that are 2 years, but most of them you need to have your pre-req's all done and many co-reqs. If you dont then you have to pay tuition to the college that you take them at (this is in addition to nursing school tuition - even if you get a "free" ride with the work back option - you still have to pay the school tuition. That could be upwards of $24K at some schools!)

We felt this was the best program for both of us. I know several Director of Nursing. They said Pittsburgh is lucky to have so many wonderful options for Nursing education programs. CCAC has a good reputation as far as nurses being prepared, according to the ones I talked to about it.

What are the pre-reqs and admission requirements for this program? I'm looking on their website but it's not very specific on the actual classes. I have Eng Comp 1, A&P 1, college Algebra, intro to psych, and growth & Dev. Any information would be much appreciated.

it does take some navigating their site to find it but you have to be under nursing.....I know it took me a while to find it the first time.

Yeah, I read through everything in the nursing section, but they're so vague. I am also transferring so I need to speak with an advisor anyways to see what transfers and what else I need to take. Thanks!:)

Also down this page in the text toward the bottom is a link that says "Course progression" that gives a nice graphic layout

Oh that's more helpful, thank you! Do you know if all the pre-reqs have to be done before you apply?

I do not know, I only went to CCAC for my prereqs for another nursing program. I had looked into CCAC's program as a back up but it it was already far to late to get the chem prereqs, even if I could apply without them, and my program didn't require chem so I just banked on my program working out, and never looked deeper into it.

hmm, thanks for all your help!!!

You do need to have your pre-reqs completed to apply. Even though they are not pre-reqs your grades from AP1, AP2 and Microbiology can help you get admission to the program. You are awarded points based on your grades in these which can possibly give you an edge.

Good luck!
