ACT 31 OF 2014 - INITIAL TRAINING AND CONTINUING EDUCATION IN CHILD ABUSE RECOGNITION AND REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

The Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs (BPOA), in conjunction with the Department of Public Welfare (DPW), is providing advance notice to all health-related licensees and funeral directors that are considered "mandatory reporters" under section 6311 of the Child Protective Services Law (CPSL) (23 P.S. 6311), as amended, that EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2015, all persons applying for issuance of an initial license shall be required to complete 3 hours of DPW-approved training in child abuse recognition and reporting requirements as a condition of licensure.

Additionally, EFFECTIVE WITH THE FIRST LICENSE RENEWAL AFTER JANUARY 1, 2015, all health-related licensees and funeral directors applying for the renewal of a license issued by the Board shall be required to complete at least 2 hours of Board-approved continuing education in child abuse recognition and reporting requirements as a condition of renewal.

Please note that Act 31 applies to all health-related licensees, regardless of whether they are subject to the continuing education requirements of the applicable board.

I just got this new information about "ACT 31 OF 2014 – INITIAL TRAINING AND CONTINUING EDUCATION IN CHILD ABUSE RECOGNITION AND REPORTING REQUIREMENTS" and it sounds great. However, where does one attend this training and obtain the necessary documentation to support meeting the requirements as set forth?

The new law regarding mandatory continuing education of child abuse for health care licensee reporters in Pennsylvania will take effect in 2015. The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association (PSNA) has created resources for registered nurses in the Commonwealth. The PSNA Department of Government Affairs and the PSNA Department of Professional Development have partnered to create education for licensed nurses as well as nursing students preparing to graduate. This education is currently under review for approval by the State Department but should be released by January 2015 when the new law takes effect.

I'm wondering what is going to happen if I have my RN (which means the 2 hour course) and next year I earn my NP. Do I need the 2 hour or 3 hour? I have an existing license and getting the NP. I'm hearing some some say 2 and some say 3 hour. I don't see this situation addressed in the email sent.
