Does anyone have a staffing guideline that requires 2 nurses at all times on their pediatric unit? What is your average census and number of beds?

hi we tried to staff one rn and one pca, the first night there was a code and we usually run our own codes so things were a mess every since that we have always had 2 nurses on. unit is 26 beds with average 9-12 pats. back when this happened we would have days when we would only have a few pts. thus the cut back but it didn't work so don't go there it's dangerous

Love my job but feel so sorry for the babies when they come in crying.

the facility I work at, has a staffing guideline that requires 1 RN to 4-5 patients at maximum with different acuity levels from I to IV at all times. the unit can accomodate 21 pediatric beds recently and our average census is 12 patients. During Night duty, the staffing guidelines is different we have 1 RN and 1 practical Nurse (PN) to 12 patients but if we have 21 patients so the ratio is different, we put 2 RNs and 1 PN.

Hope that I gave you a clear idea.
