why do you do PACU?

I think that PACU doesn't get much spotlight as other departments do (such as ER and ICU), and I am quite interested in PACU these days. So, what is it about PACU that you like that makes you continue? Is it fast paced and adrenaline-inducing like ER? Highly intense like ICU? What made you decide, and continue?

I think it depends on where you work. Right now I work in a PACU setting that I find boring. The hospital I work in does a lot of routine stuff, appendectomies, knees, shoulders, etc. I loved PACU at my previous job. We received all kinds of critical care cases and traumas. It was a lot of hard work but fast paced and always interesting. What I really like about PACU is that your patients are only typically with you for an hour or so, not much contact with family, and not much charting. I am currently considering leaving the PACU I work in now just because I feel like I work on an assembly line. I actually really love it and find a lot of challenge in it. I find that if the situation is a good one, PACU can be a learning experience every day.

yeah, well also I would take challenges in PACU over any floor challenges. I would actually feel like doing something and also not seeing same someone over 2 hrs is a big plus.

Do hospitals hire RN newbies in the PACU or just typically those with med-surf, ER, ICU experience?
