Question for OHSU Ashland BSN Students

Hello everyone,

I might be attending OHSU in Ashland next year, and I was just wondering whether I should bring my car there. Is it difficult to get around by bus? Are the hospitals really far?

Yes, the bus system is not a realistic way to get to clinicals. It doesn't run early enough or late enough.

There's a hospital in Ashland, but most of your hospital-based clinicals will be in Medford which is about 15 miles away.

Do you think it would be a good idea to live in Medford? Also, I was thinking about getting a moped. Does it snow or rain there real often?

You're on campus a lot the first year and not all your clinicals are at the hospital in that first year....so I think living in Ashland will have you closer to what you'll need the most...although it is often cheaper in Medford.

It's southern Oregon...but it's still Oregon. Yes it does rain quite a bit over the winter, and there's a fair bit of snow & ice in the winter as well.

The summer's beautiful for sure though!

I have my proctored essay next Friday and I'm so nervous.

By the way, are you currently attending OHSU in Ashland?

Don't worry about the proctored essay. It just asks you why you want to be a nurse. You'll do fine.

I have also applied for Fall 2010 and would love to get into the program. I live in Texas right now and have started looking for housing on Craigslist. It would be easier to be in Portland because my husband would be able to find a job a bit easier but, at this point I'll take what I can get.

I was thinking about getting my CNA this summer. Do you think it's impossible to work part time (maybe 15 hours a week) while being in the program?

I've got to find a way to pay for housing while I'm down there, but I read somewhere on OHSU's website saying they don't recommend that bsn students work while going to school.

Everyone's different, so there's not one answer to this. I don't think I could have worked 15 hours off-campus my sophomore year. The first term isn't a terrible load compared to the rest of the year, but it feels like it because you're still getting in to the swing of everything. There's just a lot of reading and a lot of work to be done. Then for winter & spring terms, you'll be in your nursing class, plus you'll be taking pathophysiology and pharmacology. So, now you have a lot of reading and a lot of work....times 3.

To give perspective.....I worked 37+ hours a week while carrying 15 credits while doing my prereqs and got A's and A+'s. But there's a lot more work in nursing school. During my sophomore year, I worked on campus for about 8 hours/wk....at a job I could study at for half the time and that was about all I could manage.

All that being said, there are folks in the program who have children and a couple who worked off campus (although a few of them did quit as the year progressed). There's also one person in the program who works full time while in the program (but they are just brilliant!).

So, really....it depends on you.

I'm glad to find a current student at OHSU Ashlands campus. Just wondering is all three years spent in Ashland and is graduation held there as well? And what are your thoughts about the program? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated! :D

Hi Kwamfan, I'm not sure I understand your question. Clinicals are generally not in Ashland (they might be in Medford or Grants Pass), but the program is centered down here for all three years, including graduation (each campus holds their own graduation to the best of my knowledge). Is that what you mean?

I'm loving the program, the professors are fantastic, clinicals are engaging....I'm just really enjoying the program.
