OHSU's Accelerated BSN program 2012

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hi! I live in Portland, OR and want to apply for OHSU's accelerated bachelor's program for nursing, but there isn't a lot of information out there on it. I've browsed their website, but it doesn't answer all the questions I have. I would love to know exactly what they judge you on in order to get in. I know your GPA and essays are extremely important, but do they care if you have had work history, or your CNA license or not? I don't have any experience, but have a 4.0 so far in my pre-reqs, and a 3.6 in my previous bachelor's degree (in a social work field). Anyway, I want to apply for the program to enter it in the summer of 2012, so I can finish up my pre-req's and what not. I am just wondering what else I need to do, because I really want in. Also, how much does it cost, and being accelerated, is it 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, or what? I have two kids I'm going to need to find childcare for while I'm in school, so I just want to know what I'm in for. anyway, if you can help me answer any of these questions, I would so greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Does anyone know how many are on the Waitlist? I feel like everyone is :)

Seriously lots of waitlisters so far! Do they give you a waitlist number? I'm in California so the anticipation of the letter coming isn't too fun...I'm guessing another day or 2 until I hear.

A lot of waitlists. I wonder if they send all the letters out at one time, or if they send waitlist and declines out and then acceptance letters. I don't see why they would, but I just think it is odd that nobody has posted about being accepted yet. I guess tomorrow will tell.... but it seems like it is going to take forever to get here.

embracechange-ive trolled around the forums to get a feel for linfield-some say its more community health focused-I still don't really understand what that means-most people who say this, feel that they did not get enough practice at doing actual tasks...iv, folley, etc...I think you can master those things when you actually work as an rn. Some were unhappy with amount of clinical hours...i feel that may be part function that it is an accelerated program...having said that-the person there told me they are in the process of working on the curriculum to have more lab/clinical hours...now there's a big difference between lab and clinical-but she said students are required to increase their availability-7am-11pm to have access to more clinicals...so I think they may be addressing this concern some students have...I've private messaged a person that went thru the program last year, coincidently she said she chose linfield over ohsu...shes very happy, said its a well rounded education and she said to not pay too much attention to some of the comments... .. I'm happy with Linfield and have selected this school over another ABSN program i got accepted to in california...

Having said all that...John Hopkins is a crazy opportunity to pass up...however $90K versus about $45K is a huge, somewhat life affecting amount. I typically would not mind paying more to attend such a reputable institution...but that difference is definately an amount you have to consider closely...good luck, and if you end up choosing linfield...I look forward to meeting you!

smallfry...with 470 applicants and 40 slots...most are waitlisted..hahah, i coulda wrote a better essay.

pnlu007- I just figured they would have a cut-off. You know, they accept 80, then put 40 on a waitlist or something like that. No more than 80 on it, I wouldn't think- that'd be crazy. Just curious what the odds are :)

Pnlu007...I too have a place at linfield and am waiting on ohsu. If you had both to choose from, which way would you go, and why?

catieloops-honestly most of my research has been anecdotal on this website...because of linfields transfer scholarship-tuition is about the same i think...i guess since the cost is similar, i'd have to base my decision on it national reputation, ohsu is probably the choice...having said that, i'm very happy with the opportunity to go to linfield and have selected partly due to tuition differences. the school in california was going to be like $63k i think..my guess is that if you perform well, and get great references, schools wont have significant impact to your success afterwards after you've obtained your first opportunity.

i have a couple sisters who have been nurses for a decade-they said once you get your first job, and perform well i think your gonna be set. truth is if you go to nationally recognized programs like john hopkins and ohsu-in all likelihood you will have some advantages when applying for your first job-my guess though if you stay local-i doubt ohsu will have a significant reputation advantage over linfield-but lets say you're applying to positions out of state-that reputation will probably be an advantage...but after 3-4 years working and you want to go get an advanced degree-im sure where you got your undergrad will have some impact, but i think at that level-gre or gmat, professional references, and overall experience will have just as significant if not more impact on your opportunities...

i think applicants like embracechange have the most challenging decision to make...a school with a world class reputation like john hopkins versus a more local/state side school like linfield (with a great local reputation) balanced with $90k versus $45k for tuition...i think it comes down to long term goals and where you plan to work. if someone goes to bay area in california-starting wages is like $45 per hour...versus florida where it is like $23/hour...an additional $45k to pay back on $23/hr versus $45/hr is life affecting...but if you know your gonna go back and be a nurse practioner...i'm sure jh on an application is gonna look pretty slick...anyhow...now that everything is decided...i can't wait to get going, i've sent off my letter of intent today.

I got my acceptance letter this morning. :)

(I'm just a few hours from Portland, thank goodness mail travels fast).
