OK, people, let me hear it..... do I need my own in the OR, or any other area of nursing? I have done without it so far, but I have always wondered, as it is inexpensive, and I keep getting these offers from nurses insurance orgs. What do you think? How many of you have it and will not work without it? Also, are there different kinds?

Hello, NoCrumping,

I have always been of the opinion that all nurses should have . NSO is a good company. Very reasonable rates and you can get quotes online.

I wouldn't breathe without mine.

Thanks Siri, just the kind of opinion I wanted to hear. :kiss

You are welcome. This is an issue that I have always found to be a 100%certainty with me when giving an opinion. I never waver.

There are a number of older threads here that discuss/debate the pros and cons ad nauseum, if you're interested.

My father (a physician) advised me when I was in nursing school to always carry my own insurance, and everything I've seen and heard since then has only reinforced to me the value of that advice. I would never consider working a day without my own, individual coverage. I have seen 'way too much over my >20 years in nursing to ever trust an employer to be looking out for my best interests ...

I think the cost would be worth it just for having coverage for representation if I ever had to appear before the BON for anything -- think of how many threads you see here about, "Uh oh, I'm in trouble with the BON for allegations of (X) -- what do I do???" The first thing everyone says is "get a lawyer" (and they're right!) Well, if you ever have to do that out of your own pocket, the first hour will cost you more than the annual premium for the insurance.

I didnt realize they would help with representation with BON issues (unless it relates to a law suit) very interesting..... I think I will stop considering it, and mail my $89 check today... lol thanks everyone!!!

Make sure that the policy you're buying does include BON representation, because that may vary from company to company, but my NSO coverage includes representation for any kind of disciplinary/licensure action by the BON.

Yes, elpark, the current offer I got in the mail offers BON rep, plus money if you get assaulted to or from work.... and to anyone if they are injured in your home....any of this sound familiar? Its NSO, underwritten by CNA...
