I am currently in my second year of nursing in an associates degree program. I will be graduating in May 07 (hopefully). I am really interested in working in the OR but still unsure if thats were I should start out. I would appreciate any feed back from anyone with any good advise for this area. Alot of ppl I have talked to tell me I need at least a year working the floor, preferably Med/Surg before I begin in the OR. Others tell me if I should go straight to OR and work. Please help!

I know plenty of OR nurses that went straight to the OR after graduation and did just fine.

Some ORs require med-surg experience, but not all do. The training for one is different than the other.

I started in ambulatory surgery as an LVN

I went straight into the OR out of Nursing School and I have to say that I am happy with my decision...I personally dont see how a year of being on the floor would have helped me other than seeing the post-op recovery of patients we do surgery on...Some hospitals however require you to do a year on the floor mine doesn't...I did an externship in the OR for a year as a student before I graduated Nursing School so that is how I got in the OR..A near by hospital hired 3 new grads out of my nursing class with out doing an externship...Its all according how the hospitals in your area are...Goodluck and Congrats on graduating in May!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
