I was scrubbed in on a thoracotomy, we were getting ready to close, and i was holding two retactors while the doctor was putting in the talc. both my hands were tied, the surgeon knew this and i said "doctor A___, i need to count." he totally ignored me. so i waited a minute, and i said "doctor A___, i need to count." he said nothing.

the nurse knew i was holding the retractors, and se had the nerve to say "hey J___, we need to count!!" i told that(damn)nurse i can't! i'm holding the retractors!!" (she was doing this to piss me off, and i know the rude nurses out there are chuckling about this)

so we were checking some last minute things on the wound, and we still hadn't counted yet. the circulating nurse said "hey J___, we need to count!!" i said in a rude condescending voice "i-can't, do-you-see-these-big-metal-things-in-my-hands?" she stormed off to go tell on me.

while she out of the room tattling on me, i was contemplating "when she comes back in, should i break scrub and choke her? or should i just throw this rib spreader like a boomerang and hit her directly between the eyes with it?"(by doing this, i was in high hopes that the rib spreader would've given her a ruptured globe)

BLAM!! she storms in and starts babbling something and i interrupt and say"hey M____ we need to count!! so scrub in and count!!" she looked amazed and pissed off at the same time. i was happy enough with that dumb look she gave me that i didn't need to get vulgar with her. i was also satisfied with being right, when she was so wrong in this situation and it really made my day.

has anyone else had an experience quite like this??

May I suggest anger management classes.

Because most of us have days like that frequently, and worse, and do not get so overwrought about it, as to contemplate doing injury. There are some people that are major annoyances and thick as posts. If it repeats over and over, then it is more of an issue.

This phrase "tattling" also says more about you than it does about the fellow staffer.

i chose to type the word "tattling" because it was more efficient than typing "she went to tell the director what i said, in an attempt to get me fired."

i'm glad we were able to clear that up

thank you

There are phrases such as "report", "complain", "notify".

All of which are professional...they are even shorter to type than "tattling" and quite accurate.

You will find that using the phrase "tattling" will often backfire against you, and many people will disregard what you say. It is the language of small children, much like recent posts by others using the term "ratting out". Many associate it with very immature behavior/behavior and discount what is said because of it.

Of course if you do not care how people view your post and you, feel free to use it. But if you are looking for support, using the term "tattle" unless referring to a pattern of repeated behavior, will generally not help you

For that matter, if this nurse did report you to management, why would you care? It will just make her bad when you tell them about holding the retractors. She is merely harming her rep. Again, annoying behavior but it will backlash on her.

i also chose the word "tattling" because SHE was acting like a small child.

i was not reprimanded for yelling at her

i am tempted to revise my post, but i wont

Joe,

Had you payed attention in orientation or in tech school you would have learned just how important counting is for patient safety and you would have realized that your reaction to a patient safety issue was totally unacceptable.

Had you been a more experienced tech you would have found a way to excuse yourself from holding the retractors and counted.

Had I been the circulator on this case, I would have demanded another team member for my room to relieve YOU off that case, or relieve ME so that I could relieve you and teach you how to do your job.

Have a nice day,

An experienced OR RN that circ.'s and scrubs
