Yale GEPN, Simmons or UMass Worcester GEP?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi Internet,

I'm hoping that I can harness some of your collective wisdom to help decide where to go to school next year. I have been offered admission to Yale's GEPN program, Simmons Direct Entry MSN program and UMass Worcester's Direct Entry DNP program. I applied for the FNP track at all the schools.

I'm strongly leaning towards Yale, I have a very dear friend in his first year there, the faculty and administration seem really passionate, the reputation is outstanding and I get the feeling I would leave better clinically prepared than Simmons or UMass.

However, I am a Massachusetts Resident and already paid a deposit to UMass the school is much cheaper than both private options, and Simmons is much closer to home.

I'm hoping people can speak to any differences in quality of the programs I mentioned, and give me a sense of the importance of a nursing school's reputation in terms of getting hired etc. Anyone know any graduates of the various programs? What'd they think?

Thanks for your time and effort. I appreciate any advice you have.

Hi Jake, Congrats! I'm in almost the same conundrum minus Simmons. I'd appreciate talking, but I'm not sure how much help we can be for each other if we're in the same boat! I get the impression that there's actually more clinical hours/exposure at UMASS Worcester vs. Yale, and more opportunities for research and a focus on integrative research. The preceptor-student ratio at UMASS is better than yale (I think 1:4-6 vs. 1:8), and the NCLEX pass rate is also higher. That said, obviously YSN's program looks great. I'm finding it hard to weigh the school's against each other with reputation vs. difference in degrees (MSN vs. DNP). UMASS Worcester is well regarded as far as I can tell, even if it's not an ivy, and more closely integrated with a medical school than Yale. I'd be happy to chat, and appreciate it, though I'm not sure on here how to share contact information with just one person and not all of allnurses.com. -Eli

Hello to you both who replied to this post!

My name is Heather, and I also have been accepted to both Yale GEPN and UMASS GEP for the FNP tracks. I am having an exciting/challenging time deciding between these two and Vanderbilt. I am from California, so I'm not too familiar with the east coast, but I am up for a new adventure. Since you both are a year ahead in my process, where did you both ultimately decide and for what reasons? Any and all advice would be helpful! Thank you and congrats on your futures.

Hi Heather, both Jake and I chose Yale - and I'd be happy to talk with you about your process, but I can't speak to Vanderbilt...but I do know that a few of the GEPNs at YSN (in our class) applied there as well. Feel free to drop me an email at [email protected] and we can chat. Good luck and congrats! Eli

Honestly I think its an easier thing to talk through on the phone, its important to get a sense of who you are, where you're coming from, what you value etc. and then continue it from there. All the programs have + and - and of course we can really only speak with any authority about the one we chose, but send me an email and I'll send you my phone number.
