UT Tyler NP Hybrid Program Questions

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

I am weighing options for online or in this case Hybrid NP programs. I have pretty much settled on UT Tyler. What information can someone who is in the program provide as far as entrance rates? I noticed several people recently applied and didn't get in. Also--it states 5-6 classes on campus per semester. Are any of those on Saturday, as I am trying to see how much time from work I would need. If I plan to do it part-time would it still be 5-6 per semester? Also, if I was crazy and went full time, is that even possible with an 8-5 M-F job? I am trying to decide how much school time I would have to dedicate to ramp it up to full-time. Thanks for your help!

Hi Jennifer,

I am a recent grad from UT Tyler FNP program (August 1, 2014) and wanted to try and answer some of your questions:

What information can someone who is in the program provide as far as entrance rates? Entrance rates to the FNP program I am not quite for sure but can tell you pass rate for certification so far has been 100%.

There are about 5-6 classes on campus per semester - this will happen more so during Diagnostics, Primary Health Assessment, Primary Care I, II, & III.

Are any of those on Saturday - None of these will be on Saturday's.

If I plan to do it part-time would it still be 5-6 per semester? Yes it would still be 5-6/ semester. Although I don't remember having that many campus visits. During Health assessment and primary care's you mainly visited campus for exams (and here recently they have moved to a proctor service that allows you to take exams at home with supervision), and check off's.

It will not be possible to work FT unless you are hospital based working 3 days a week a off 4. M-F is not going to do it starting your 2nd-3rd year.

Hopes this answers some of your questions and good luck!

Hello,

I am also interested in University of Texas at Tyler's FNP program. When you are required to go to Tyler for the 5 - 6 campus visits per semester - are these day-long visits or do they span multiple days, ie 2 to 3 days. Also, does the school provide preceptors if you need them? I would appreciate any help/answers from those who have graduated from or are currently in the program.

Hello spudbunny,

On exam day if you choose to go to campus it was an all day thing you would test in the morning and then have lecture afterwards. or if you took exam at home being supervised (proctored) then you could watch lecture via internet after exam. The only time it was a 2 day span was the first semester during welcoming orientation and that was it. Now remember visiting campus for exams started during health assessment for myself and then thereafter. It was always 2 exams (50 questions - multiple choice) and one comprehensive...The have just changed curriculum just take a look at it... Let me know if this helps...or if I can answer anymore questions.

Thank you for your quick reply Starkitten29 - do you know if the school will help you find preceptors? My only hesitation in applying to an FNP program is finding the preceptors. I have heard many horror stories about people having to wait months to find them. Are local NPs/clinics/hospitals interested in precepting students? Finally, have you and your classmates found it easy to get a job after graduating? How many people are in the FNP program. Thanks for your patience with all my questions.

Any advice for those applying? Is there anything in particular they look for on the admission essay?
