US Citizen Wants to Apply to Canadian Nursing Program

Hi everyone!

I am currently a pre-nursing student. I have finished a majority of the prerequisites needed to apply to nursing programs in the US. However, I am starting to get interested in applying to nursing programs in Canada. Would it be difficult for me to apply to a nursing program in Canada as a US citizen? How difficult would it be for me to get the student visa and would I be able to work part-time with that visa? How difficult would it be for me to return and work in the US (since my family would still be here)?

I am sorry for all the questions. I don't travel a lot so I don't know anything about this, but it sounds so interesting! Thank you so much for your time and help.

I don't want to jump to conclusions so I will ask you, why Canada?

I find it difficult to believe that you are just all of a sudden interested in applying to Canadian programs and go through the nuisances of obtaining a study visa and then coming back tot he US.

BTW I am a US Citizen but I live in Canada. I will be applying to a program here but I will tell you that US schools are on top of my list. I would advise you to please do your research before going this route.

I was interested in some schools in Canada and wanted to know how complicated the process would be. I also thought it would be an an amazing experience to live somewhere far, but not too far, from home (country-wise). Schools in the US are my top priority, but I wanted to see if it was possible for me to apply to those schools in Canada as well.

Another thing to consider. Even though you are a US citizen, I believe that you will still be considered a graduate of a foreign nursing program. The implications of this cary from state to state, bowever thisnwill likely be a factor each time you apply for licensure in a new state.

I have some American friends who send their kids to Canadian universities because tuition is cheaper. I don't know any who went to nursing school though, so not sure of all the implications. You would be a foreign student so might pay higher fees than Canadians but still cheaper than many U.S. Schools. I don't know anything about student VISAs, sorry

I would strongly suggest that you research the highlighted information... if you have not done so already. Also, someone else mentioned that you will have hoops to jump through if you try to bring that education back to the United States, meaning that if you become a nurse up north, you will not automatically be one down here.
