SUNY Stony Brook PMHNP summer 18

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all. This is my first post on here. I am desperately seeking others who have been through this program or who are interviewing for it for this year. I applied 1/18 to Stony Brooks PMHNP program and received email today to schedule interview.

ANYONE OUT THERE RECENTLY GO THROUGH THIS PROGRAM? I'd like some insight on the interview process, how long it took to get acceptance/decline letter... and I'm also wondering why I was asked to bring my laptop? Is this something everyone is asked to do? It's NBD... but just seemed odd to me.

Thank in advance. Any and all info would be greatly appreciate.

Hi. I interviewed a few weeks ago, for their PMHNP program. Was tough, felt like I was underqualified - most interviewees had prior (some extensive) psych experience. I feel like the rest of my application/profile is pretty strong - undergrad GPA 4.0, current ICU experience, good writing skills (as it pertains to the required essay), life/personal experience, drive, ambition, etc... However, I left the interview feeling out of place, if I compare myself to other candidates during the actual interview. Still hopeful. Should hear by end of March.

To answer your questions: laptop is for the essay we were asked to write in the beginning of the interview. Unexpected, as it said nothing in the email I received from them about bringing a laptop. Was about 10 people in the interview, in a group. 2 faculty members. General questions such as role of PMHNP and why the decision to become one "now".

Good luck.

Hi. Thank you for responding to my post. I think I may have been at your interview. I'm Olivia.. from Albany. I believe I sat next to you at the conference table while waiting to go in the interview. Dmitry, am I right? I can say that I felt EXACTLY how you felt after leaving. Competitively, I felt as if I am a strong candidate, HOWEVER, I don't feel that I performed or spoke as well as I wanted to and that the staff didn't get to know any of us very personally.

This is going to be a long two months wait. Considering the numbers they threw out, there is a 36.5% rate of admission for this new class. I hope we both get in.

Hi, Olivia. You are correct, we sat next to each other before the interview. Good luck, keep in touch. I wish there was more info about the program, and a better communication/chatter between current and prospective students. I understand, everyone is busy, but this is a good site to chat, vent, share info, etc.

Wish you the best.

Does every applicant get an interview?

Does every applicant get an interview?

According to one of the interviewer, no.

Well that's a positive! I recently had my interview. I wonder how many get interviews out of 160

NO. I believe they only interview the minimally qualified applicants. I think interviews are over now. It's now the dreaded 3 week wait.

I've been so busy I didn't have the opportunity to reply to you the way I wanted to. I left the interview feeling so upset. It was a let down since I went in very positive. I don't know if you remember, or even noticed, but I was cut off while talking. My stomach dropped.

Anyway, SBU has always been my top choice, but after the interview, I'm unsure that if accepted I would attend. I applied to 3 other programs after the interview. There is one in Maine that is nearly identical to SBU'S, and it's actually cheaper.

A little about me for comparison. I have 5 years nursing experience... hem/onc, psych and ED. I also have a B.A. in Psychology and Human Development. Graduated with 3.77 and 3.61 with BSN. My recommendations are from an Attending Psychiatrist I worked closely with while doing inpatient pscyh and from two professors, one of which is a SBU alumni and yearly donor. I thought I had a strong application, however, maybe I didn't mesh well with the professor conducting our interviews. I bet it was the bright lipstick.

Anyway, Dmitry, if you don't happen to get accepted, I can give you information on the other school. Perhaps we'll attend it together. The staff, thus far, have been LOVELY.

Hi Liv- what school in Maine did you also apply to? Is it an online program?

hi there. i'm sorry for the delay. the school is husson university. it's a very similar hybrid program. i believe one week in the summer and 1 online lecture once a month for 3 hours.

have you heard anything yet? from what I've read, most will hear mid March and some will hear a few days prior to orientation.
