Case Western MN vs Emory ABSN for future APRN?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all! Long time reader, firs time poster. After going through the terrible-ish nursing application process, I've narrowed my choices down to Case Western's Masters in Nursing (not MN) and Emory's ABSN. Just some background - I have a non-nursing major and my end goal is to be a nurse practitioner. Both schools are "ranked" the same according to USWNSR (although I'm not sure how much this matters). So the question really is of which degree would be best in this case. A few of the MN courses would transfer to an MSN/DNP program so the MN program being 5 months longer doesnt bother me too much. I guess my main question is, is there any benefit to having that Masters instead of the BSN in terms of going into APRN? I've seen this question addressed on other threads, but I was hoping to get more input on the programs specifically to maybe push me over to one side or the other. Also, I'm a CA native and am hoping to go back to CA to work after some time - if anyone knows if one degree will transfer over better than the other that would really help!!

Thank you so much to the allnurses community who kept me sane during the application process!!

The MN degree has a potential to shorten the amount of credits you will need towards completion of an NP program if you choose a post-master's certificate program. It probably won't make much of a difference if you were to go straight to a DNP. Having noticed that you are from California, you would find that majority of NP programs here are still offered at the Master's level and that DNP offerings tend to be structured as a post-Master's entry option.
