New Grad Oncology Fellowship-Yikes!

Specialties Oncology

Published

Hello to all; I just graduated and passed my Nclex-RN . In July, I am starting a year-long oncology fellowship at a teaching hospital in D.C.. I feel so lucky-I wanted to do oncology, and this place is well-known for setting a high standard of care. But I am so nervous! I feel like when I arrive for the first day, they'll say "what are YOU doing here? You don't have what it takes!" My dh says that I am being silly, but it is really weird-they hired me on the spot, so I keep thinking, "did they really Know it was ME? They must of gotten me mixed up with someone else!" I'll have an assigned preceptor and a year of 12/12/8/8shifts, plus 8/wk of diadatic work. It is a magnet hospital...

But, all my whinning aside, I wanted to ask all of you for any tips for oncology or nursing in general for a new grad-what helped you? Thanks!

Blessings and Peace

Dear Dawn,

My brother passed away of brain cancer 2/11/05. Good Samaritan Hospital -- Oncology Department helped us from 2000 - 2005. I am not a nurse, but from a patient/family perspective, LOVE THEM. If you can. Greet them with a smile and a joke. Take the time to hold their hand. Each time you see them, remember, but for the grace of God, it could be you or your family member.

My brother and I were so lucky to be cared for by Good Sam. They loved him all the way through to the end. They laughed and cried with us. I'll never forget them. I pray God will bless each of them forever.

Sorry if this sounded too serious, but, just wanted you to know, you will make a difference. GOD BLESS!

Thank you for your kind words-I will carry them with me; they were not too serious at all-they are the kind of thing that I need to know and remember as a nurse. It must of been so hard to lose your brother, it is good to read that he(and you) was well-cared for

Blessings

Hi Dawn,

We may get to know each other! I was also just hired as a new grad at a magnet hospital and I have a July start date. I am looking forward with great anticipation and trepedation to working in oncology. It has been a dream of mine since I was very young. I am glad to have the opportunity for the guidance provided by the program. I would not want to hit the floor running in this field. I have no idea what it means to work swing shift work by I will learn  I still have to get my DC license. I have one from another state that has reciprosity. Peace.
