New career, new hopes

So. My career's future ended in Dec when we were told that my plant would be shutting down in March. The nearest(?) facility that does my type of work is in Arizona. Moving away from my family and everything that I know is not an option.

My current plans are to be Mr. Mom (while my savings lasts) and to enter a nursing program. I've been accepted into a local college and am working on my pre-reqs. My level of education at this point is a GED that I recieved in 91'. (I know what you're thinking. But at that age I already knew everything and couldn't be told anything. I'm sure that I wasn't the only one.)

Anyways. I've read this site many times and decided to drop in and say 'Hello. I'm a student now and would like to participate!'

Haha!

Good for you! Welcome to Allnurses

Welcome!! As for the GED, I dropped out and never got mine:bugeyes: People change and I am so glad I can't look back and see the girl I was at 18... I wouldn't even know her. Glad you decided to go back. Sorry to hear about the job but I hope this works out better for you and your family. Good luck

I know! My career came to a screeching halt in Aug. and I had to totally re-direct. I went to CNA school and got credentialed in home health, long term care, and CNA. My next goal is LPN. I am currently working full time as a CHHA, and really love it. I miss the pay I used to make, but the rewards in home health are tremendous. I have always wanted to go from

being a respiratory therapist into nursing, but never had the opportunity. Life makes crazy turns, and here I am at last working on fulfilling a dream. It seemed horrendous at first, but now seems like an answered prayer. I love what I am doing, and am making plans to complete the goal.

I never graduated from high school either (it simply didn't interest me and I have NO regrets about not finishing actually), I didn't get my GED but I went on to college and graduated with an associates in Biology and my BSN (with a great GPA no less).

Anyways, welcome!!

Sorry about your job loss. My husband recently lost his and we have had to take a loss of monthly income (his new job doesn't pay much at all but we are thankful he has something when so many have nothing right now). Thankfully I do make good money as an RN or we would be in a world of hurt. He is also planning to go back to college to finish his teaching degree.

So, I get the impression that I'm not the only one who's "life plans" have recently taken an unexpected turn. Haha! Every time I've had a curveball thrown at me before things have (eventualy) turned out for the better. I choose to continue to expect that to happen. We all should.

Thanks for all your support and welcomes.

That has been my experience as well. I am not missing the old, just the salary, but do enjoy the new path immensely.
