externships in the tulsa area?

Does anyone know of any place hiring externs for the summer? Ive looked on hospital websites, but can't find anything. I just finished my first semester of an ADN program, and I know a lot of people don't hire externs until their senior year, but I have heard of a few who will take students after their first semester, Im just wondering if there are any in the tulsa area? Thanks.

Applications for externships for the summer are turned in at most area hospitals during the early spring (Jan- March). You could call and see of they still have any openings- so many people apply! I applied for mine at St. John's in Jan and barely got in. If your interested in the fall, you should go ahead and apply now. HR at SJ told me the deadline for fall is July. Most hospitals require that you will be going into your senior year- like my situation. I hope you can find one that you can get into. Good luck!!

Thanks Kim! I'll be calling St. Johns and see what my options are! :) Also are u working as an extern now? What floor are you on and what are your duties? Sorry, Im curious now! lol:D

No, I will start with their summer program on June 2, which is a 8 wk thing in the summer twice a week ( either two 8's or two 12's), in the fall it's a 16 wk ( one 8 or one 12 ). I goto orientation in two weeks. I will be on 9 west, from which I understand is stroke patients. I did not get to be assigned to any of the places that I put on my application, but hey! I'll take any paid learning exerience! If yu goto the website, I think it gives you a list of duties. But, basically whatever you have been checked off at school, you can do such as NG tubes, foley, drains, dressing changes, incision care, assessments, cultures, blood glucose. You can call either Connie or Gail at HR.

All the major hospitals have externships in Tulsa (St. John, Hillcrest, SF, TRMC, etc) but for the summer you have to have your application in by January--and actually when I went for my interview at St. John they told me they started getting applications for the summer as early as SEPTEMBER (crazy I know). They go pretty quickly but there may be some still available I'm not sure....I start in June as well and you can do anything you have been "checked off" on but I know at St. John at least the nurses are really nice and are willing to go in with you until you are comfortable because I know practicing on foleys/NGs on a lab dummy is not the same as a person! :no:

There is always the Fall you can apply for as well...

Hi! I am an RN at Saint Francis. I have worked with Nurse Externs here for a while. I know they have an Extern program at different times during the year. You have to be in your final year of your program. The summer program seems to be the best one - you can work 2 different units. In order to work on the floors before your last year you get great experience working as a Patient Care Tech-nursing student. You can go to the hospital website career center to apply. Hope this is helpful. :rolleyes:
