Specializes in Pediatric Hem/Onc.

I hate gerontology. I hated it in my ADN program, and I hate it even more now. This class is disorganized. I cannot apply these concepts to my practice because I'm a frigging pediatric nurse. The only thing I've learned is that my decision to avoid gero was an excellent one. The reason I didn't consider geriatrics as a specialty is because I don't like it. Old people are important and deserve the best care, but they are not my cup of tea. That doesn't make me a bad person. That's what's so cool about nursing - there's a niche for everyone.

Grrr. But, to be fair.....I DID enjoy watching Tuesdays with Morrie.

That is all. Enjoy your weekend, folks! :)

Specializes in Pediatric Pulmonary.

I have to say I really don't get why I need to take this class when I also had it in my ADN. I'm so tired of guessing what they want in these papers, though I'll admit I'm loving my TA so far.

Apparently a lot of ADN programs don't include gero. They should let you test out of nursing classes!!!!

Specializes in ER.

I don't mind the class and it was the last class I took in my ADN program. So far it is very easy and I am glad that I decided to take this class at the same time as taking my writing class through Miami since that's an 8 week program. This program is a lot better than 4510. I was guessing in that class as to what they wanted.

It's not that I mind the class, or that it's particularly hard. I am just irritated that I am required to pay OU several hundred dollars to take a course I have already taken in my ADN. The same goes for Health Assessment. What registered nurse did not learn health assessments in an ADN program? They used to let you test out of that one, but no more.

OK - that's the end of my rant. I'm done in July, and I cannot wait! :)

It's funny, b/c a lot of the guys in my program feel the same way about mother baby. They know they will never work in that area of nursing and it is quite different from the rest of nursing in many respects. Also, in my program it is one of the tougher classes, if for no other reason that it is held in the same semester as medsurg II.

I think that is part of the issue with ADN programs is that most ADN programs are so similar to traditional BSN programs now. It wasn't always that case but in my area, the real differences come from the general education credits. Although some programs still do not have leadership or community, mine did.

Awww, that was my favorite class. Don't even get me started on 4550 though, LOL! Congratulations on finishing up!

You know, all the things you said about gerontology I would say about pediatrics. Different strokes for different folks. I'll take your share of gerontology. I love it.
