New Grad BSN..looking for job in Columbus...There's Hope.

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

This is my first post here.

I used allnurses throughout nursing school and I am still here.

I graduated last year with my BSN. I live in Columbus, I filled out applications with all the major hospital, NWCH, OSU and Ohiohealth at first, I have an interview few weeks later with NWCH and grant, didn't get it.. So i started applying everywhere, Btn the four hospital including mount Carmel health system nothing. However, I knew somebody working at OSU and they started asking around for me and handing out my application in two weeks I got an interview., thank God.

Initially it was going to be a panel interview, but when I got there, got my finger prints done and The recruiter walked me to the nursing manager. the manager was so nice. She started telling me about the schedule and benefits, I was like I GOT this. The hiring process wasn't bad at all.

I send a thank you email to the recruiter thanking her and my strong interest in the position and walking me down to the nursing manager office.

I sent a thank you card to the nursing manager also.

They contacted me about references and they really check them thoroughly, they couldn't get some of my initial people and allowed me to replaced them. After a week I wasn't hearing anything so I called the nursing manager and left a voicemail within few hours I got an OFFER.. Yayyyy

It isn't true that OSU only hires new grads through the Residency program!! I started out at OSU in August 2012 and just left my job there (to relocate to PA). I was never in the Residency program. I did have to attend monthly new grad classes (which, sadly, were not worth the time). In my year there my unit hired several new grads! It helps if you know someone - ANYONE - who can help put your name in the manager's ear. I went to Mt. Carmel for nursing school and many of my classmates took jobs with them. Within the first year SO many of them switched to OSU! The pay and benefits can't be beat. I'm disappointed moving to PA because I will make only 70% as an experienced nurse here as I did as a new grad there. I LOVED WORKING FOR OSU!!!

Those monthly new grad classes you had to attend - that is residency. That's it. Just monthly classes for 4 hours that are a giant waste of your time. I don't do anything different than any other nurse here at OSU except waste my time 4 hours at a month listening to useless information. I was hired directly onto my unit and work here like everyone else.

Ok, just want to make sure I understand correctly. The "new grad residency" consists of just classes, correct? When you went to apply at OSU did you apply to a job posting or did you have to apply for "new grad residency" and then get assigned/pick a unit?

Also any advice to improve my chances of getting in there? I go to school up here in Cleveland.

New Grad Residency is a national program. You can read about it here: https://www.uhc.edu/16807.htm. Numerous hospitals in the country participate in it; OSU is one of them. You can view participants by state here: https://www.uhc.edu/16807.htm

It really is just a 4 hour class once a month for a year. Each month has a different topic.

There is a specific job posting for new grads. One is from University Hospitals (Rhodes, Doan, Ross) and the other is for the James. However, if you apply to any Staff Nurse position and get hired, you'll still end up in residency. I ended up getting a job I never actually applied for, but I was also internal.

When you apply, you put your #1, #2, and #3 preferences for the type of unit you want (med/surg, PCU, ICU, OB, etc). When you are hired, you are hired onto a specific unit just like any other nurse. You do not rotate through various units.

I have found the best thing to do with OSU is persistence. It's a big hospital with a lot of applications. Things get lost in the shuffle and move slow. Apply apply apply. And do a lot of follow-up! Make sure they know who you are!
