Hey all,

I got an interview coming up for the ER at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. I'm new to the area and don't know what are the good hospitals, ER's, etc, etc.

Anyone here work for the MVH organization and/or the ETC there? I've heard that kettering medical network treats it's employees better, but I dunno what is meant by "better". Does KMN pay more or something? Any insight would be great....thank you!! :)

It's difficult to answer your question because the answer depends on one's perspective. Kettering Network and Premier Health Partners are very different, it's like comparing apples to oranges. I work for Kettering Medical Center and overall, I am happy there. As far as pay, I have heard that Miami Valley pays more, but they are a bigger hospital, so that would seem to make sense. If you are into trauma, Miami Valley ETC is the way to go, you will see a lot. I don't know what your experience is, but I know of some nurses who worked for the Kettering Network in an ER position, transferred to MVH, and then came back to Kettering. It's a high stress environment, from what I understand.

I was in OH for a few years several years ago, and worked for both Kettering and MVH (although I was not employed in the EDs, I worked in psych and did psych evals in both EDs on a regular basis). I was v. happy with both as employers. Since MVH is the Level I trauma center for the region, all the juicy, interesting trauma goes to the ED there.

Kettering is a 7th Day Adventist medical center and has a much more socially conservative milieu than MVH. I'm not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, just that it's something to be aware of. Also, since Kettering is located in an older, affluent suburb of Dayton and MVH is the public hospital right downtown, the "nice" people tend to go to Kettering (i.e., not a lot of diversity) and MVH gets everybody (inc. all the people Kettering doesn't really want to deal with -- the street people, etc.)

Again, IMHO, both are excellent hospitals and excellent employers. Beyond that, it's a v. personal decision to choose between them.

I work on a tele floor at Kettering, and though I haven't dealt with any street people, the population that visits KMC is slowly changing. While many patients range from middle class to upper class in terms of socioeconomic status, I have had some patients over the last year or so that lacked a job, insurance, and were drug and/or alcohol addicted. They either came in to detox, were there for an OD, or had an MI as a result of their usage. I expect this trend to continue though I don't see it happening to the extent that the urban hospitals deal with.

Hi everybody, I am new to this thread. I am going to start nursing program this fall and i was just curious to know how is outthere in dayton for nurses regarding pay and which hospital is good to work at. Thank you for any advice or info.

I have been at MVH for almost 8 years. I love it there, I don't ever plan on leaving. I have worked all over the hospital as a PCT/HUC. Right now MVH is only lacking less than 1% of it's needed nursing staff. It's because of the economy. People just aren't leaving their current positions so there isn't much of a turn over rate right now. I think as the economy stablizes people will start moving around again leaving more positions open. (They don't want to be 'low man' on the totem pole!)

Congrats on nursing school! Where are you going? I should start Sinclairs program next spring!!!

I have worked for Kettering for almost 20 years, I would not go anywhere else.

We get some homeless and the less fortunate just not as much as MVH. Good Luck in whatever you decide. KHN has a hiring freeze right now, I don't know if that applies to all of nursing or not.

Thank you for your replies. I am Starting RN program at Sinclair next fall. I am really exicited about that. What you think about Sinclair's nursing program. I always welcome any suggestions or info.
