LPN schools in Cleveland area/NE Ohio?

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hi all! I'm an STNA in NE Ohio looking into applying to LPN school in the Cleveland area. I'm looking at Central School of Practical Nursing, Marymount School of Practical Nursing, ATS Institute, and Tri-C (though Tri-C doesn't start til next Fall, and the others start in Spring or Summer). I'd appreciate any advice on these schools from anyone who attended or knows anything about any of these programs. Thanks!

I am in the process of applying right now. I'm just trying to finish up my essay, request transcripts, etc. How long did it take for you to be accepted into the program? I'm planning to submit all of my paperwork on Wednesday, but my transcripts and references won't arrive for at least a week or two therafter. Did you submit all of your things together or separately? How did the whole process work in your case? I'm just so nervous because there isn't much time left before classes start.

Tripletmommy,

I was actually suprised how quickly I got my acceptance letter... especially since they are still doing the testing... anyway, I went to the information session on June 22nd. On July 1st, I took everything to the school except my GED transcript, Background check and 1 of my references... all of which were being sent directly to the school. I called on July 9th to make sure that they received the other stuff and they informed me that my acceptance letter had been sent out on the 8th!!! I was told it could take up to 6 weeks to find out when I submitted the stuff.

Did you get your stuff dropped off yet?

No, I was going to drop it all off yesterday, but when I called the school to ask about a couple of issues, I decided to wait until today or tomorrow. I talked to Lee yesterday and she advised me to call and talk to Mrs. Whewell today regarding my situation. Basically, I have FIVE schools from which to transfer transcripts (being that we have to send them from every single institution). I have high school, two community colleges, an interior design school, and then my last university where I was majoring in Psychology. The high school and junior college transcripts are being sent, no problem. I ran into issues when requesting the design school and university transcripts. Both are being held pending a balance due to the schools...one balance benig legitimate and the other not. So at this tiny design school in San Diego, they aren't releasing my official transcripts, nor are they even responding to my communication regarding receipt of payment I sent three years ago for a semester I completed five years ago. They have never even contacted me regarding a balance due. I just happened to find out a few years back, so I paid them...and we're talking about $1600 here. The other is from my last university for spring 2008. On that one, I applied for a loan, they received the loan check, mailed it to me for signature, I mailed it back to them, and it was never deposited. That school is so big and the program was online that they don't know if they never received the check or if it got lost somehow. Regardless, Sallie Mae released the hold on the funds and have no way of re-issuing the check now that it has been so long. All of this happened during the semester I found out I was pregnant and the last year has been such a rollercoaster that I didn't even realize until a few weeks ago that there was an issue. So now I owe that school for spring 2008, which means I need to pay off my balance before my official transcripts can be sent. Such a huge mess.

Anyway, I called Lee to explain these things and told her I would be including a letter regarding these things in my application...and would also be including copies of my unofficial transcripts. She told me to call Mrs. Whewell about this. I think she was concerned that this could hold up financial aid or something...but it shouldn't have any impact on that. I am just concerned that they will not review or accept my application based on not having the official transcripts. Everything else is done, though, including my financial aid (fafsa, that green packet, etc).

Sorry so long and detailed, but I'm just really nervous. I don't know how much weight they put on the transcripts being that they don't even offer credit for prior classes, anyway. I will not be able to attend the program full-time starting later than this fall because by next fall my husband will be attending law school and I need to be employed in order to support our family. So it's either start now, or go part-time while working full-time in the future.

So I'll keep you posted, but I'm just so nervous about this whole thing.

OH NO! I hope you are able to get that all ironed out ASAP! What a headache! Also, if your fafsa is done then I would guess that it is not affected by the situation with the other schools. Lots and lots of luck to you! If I were you I would submit EVERYTHING else... maybe they will make an exception due to extenuating circumstances... Best of luck to you! Keep me posted!

Hey, everyone! I am new to this post and I have a couple of questions/concerns about starting the program at Central. How the heck are you guys going to work and do this program? I am really nervous about this (that is if I'm excepted I dropped off everything this week). I am not sure how a job would be able to work around the school schedule-in the info session they said it's 4-days a week, but the clinicals could be any hours really and that each quarter you may have off a Monday and the next quarter may have off a Friday. Do any of you know the schedule for the part of the program in September? I would really love to do this program, I'm just nervous about being able to stay afloat financially. What about the health insurance-anyone have any good ideas for inexpensive coverage? Please any response would be awesome.

Thanks

I actually will not be working. But I also have three babies, haha. If I didn't have the girls and needed to work, I would just do so on my 3 days off. Or, I would do a few 4/6 hour shifts on one or two school days and then work 2 out of my 3 days off. After having 3 babies, I can honestly say I do the equivalent of a 16-hour shift every single day. I am so well-trained to stay awake and productive all day long that working and going to school wouldn't phase me. So my advice would be to make a decision as to whether or not you want to take on the responsibility of school and work, and then commit to it 100%. And, from experience, you'll need to make school your number one priority. Nothing can come before your education. It's only one year. Just keep telling yourself that. Only one year of sacrificing your finances in order to improve your future long-term. Anyone can do it, but you need to motivate yourself to remain committed.

As for health insurance, try calling the school and have them tell you specifically what kind of coverage you need. If it's only major medical, it should be fairly inexpensive. If it's comprehensive, you can choose from any number of plans. I know Kaiser offers an individual plan for around $150/month, I believe. There are so many different kinds of coverage from which to choose. You can choose a plan with a low monthly payment, but huge co-pays or very high deductibles. The benefit is that if you're healthy, you probably just won't need to use it. The problem is that if you end up needing medical assistance, you may have hefty bills in the end...which technically is the risk you run by having no insurance, anyway. So before you commit to a plan, find out exactly what the school requires. They weren't clear during our information session.

Good luck to you!

I, like Tripletmommy, do not work outside of the home, but having 6 kids (from 12 y/o to 10 months) is equal to a full time job and then some... lol. I am nervous about how I am going to manage... but I just have to remember it is only a year. You can do it! I don't know what the schedule looks like for the Adult Learning Seminar in September. They said they will mail out the schedule soon.

As for the insurance, in the papers that they sent me with my acceptance packet it gives the name of Sentry Student Security as a carrier.... I looked up their prices and they seem pretty reasonable.. (for me only, at 33 it would cost me $33 a month.) You can look their brochure up online. But you can use any carrier.

Good luck to you!

How old are your triplets, Tripletmommy? I don't know how you do it! I thought I had my hands full, lol. My 10 month old just started walking about a week and a half ago.. I was sooo not ready for that!

Did you get everything turned in?

Our girls are going to be 9 months on Wednesday. They were born at 29 weeks, though, so developmentally they are more like 6 1/2 months. One of our girls is crawling, another is trying to perfect her crawling position (which means she gets up on all fours and accidentally scoots backwards a lot, lol), and our third is rolling over and working on her body strength/control. Our third actually has a congenital heart defect and a chromosomal abnormality called DiGeorge Syndrome. She had open heart surgery back in March and her medical situation has delayed her development. Mentally, she seems to be fairly on par with the other two, but physically she struggles. Our big problem right now is that they have somehow started waking up at night again and we're not sleeping well AT ALL. They will stay up during the day, MAYBE take their normal naps, and then wake up throughout the night. It's soooooo BAD. I'm hoping it's teething (none of them yet have teeth)...so I'm needing to find a day where I'm not too exhausted to start working on correcting this, rather than giving in and offering middle-of-the-night bottles. My husband is taking an LSAT prep course and is studying constantly right now, so I'm the one taking primary responsibility for the girls for the next few weeks. The lack of sleep adds so much extra pressure!!!

Anyway, I turned in my application and some other paperwork almost two weeks ago. I have tried calling the school on a couple of occasions to follow up on receipt of my transcripts, background check, and references, but I keep calling at inopportune times...and I'm always unavailable when they need me to call back. I'm planning to follow up again today and I'm hoping my app will be ready for review sooner than later. I'll keep you posted!

I just wanted to say than-you all who posted an answer to this question. I moved to Ohio from Illinois a few years ago and really had no idea where to start. I have continued to try and take courses through Lorain County Community College, but I have had so many problems with the school that I was on my way to giving up. I happened upon this thread and found the information to be most helpful. I was so fed up with the school that I was willing to call my dreams quits, so I am so happy to find other ways to complete my education. Thank-you all very much!

Central is a very prejudice school whose classes do not I repeat do not transfer over on to a RN program. My aunt is a graduate and she wants to become a RN, only most of her classes will not transfer over. I tried that school and I am a very intelligent black woman with a great work history and I was not accepted or treated well during the application process. When I called in i was very articulate and the lady (white) was very nasty to me. Some people, including people on this website are still prejudice. Out of the many black people wasting away there are still people like myself who want to do better but are not given a chance.

I am looking for a LPN school without a waiting list whose classes transfer over to a RN program.
