  1. Do you (or anyone else) know anything about LaRoche? Besides the fact that it's pricey, unfortunately. But, it looks like the closest to me and has no pre-reqs. Butler (like most RN programs) requires pre-reqs and since I was planning on starting with LPN, I've just been working as a CNA and haven't taken an pre-reqs. St. Margaret's LPN class starts only once a year and is already full for this year, so LaRoche may be my best option. Anyone have any opinions/info/experience with LaRoche College?
  2. I am a CNA and understand your concerns. During my training, we were assigned 1 resident on our clinical days. I really enjoyed getting to know this lady, helping her with her ADL's, and spending time getting to know her throughout my shifts with her. Boy, was I in for a shock when I began working at my first job as a CNA with an assignment of 15 residents! Call lights ringing off the hook, literally RUNNING from room to room, working on people like an assembly line. It was awful--I spent so many nights crying all through my drive home. I quit after 6 mo. and found a facility with--this is key--a LOW pt:staff ratio. I now have 6 residents and I love my job. My point is, you can find a good CNA job where you don't have to be rushed all the time-- just ask about their staffing ratios in your interview. Also, might I suggest working for a "private duty" or homecare agency? They hire CNA's to care for 1 client only. This may be more your cup of tea as well. Hope some of this helped. Good luck to you!
  3. I'm looking into Sewickley--that could work! Unfortunately, the school moved to Moon Township. Do you have any idea about tuition? I couldn't find much info. on the website.
  4. Hi all, husband and I are moving to a north suburb of Pittsburgh (Cranberry area). I've been an STNA in Ohio for a year now and wanted to start nursing school soon. I was planning on LPN, but I have a Bachelor's in another subject and am open to ADN or accelerated BSN. The thing is, while there are many great schools in Pittsburgh (pitt, st.margaret, etc) it's over an hour drive into the city so I'd rather find something closer. Lenape Tech in Kittanning which I have seen praised on these boards is also over an hour away Is there a closer nursing school to Cranberry that I am missing? I'd appreciate any/all help! :bowingpur thanks!! -Filumena
  5. I agree with the previous posters about coming in/calling in. Also, I would recommend applying at an assisted living home. That's how I got my first "nursing" job. Believe it or not, you don't have to be a CNA (or even be CPR-certified!) to work as a "caregiver" at an assisted living home. Most of my co-workers had no previous care-giving or nursing experience whatsoever, so they jumped at the chance to hire me seeing that I'd actually been CNA and CPR trained. I worked there for 6 mo. before I applied at another (better, and higher paying) nursing home. Meanwhile, I gained valuable experience--seeing as many of the residents were high- or total-cares. (I'm talking catheters, aphasia, hoyer lifts, dementia, colostomies, etc etc etc.) and I was able to get that 6 mo. experience I needed to get my foot in the door at other facilities and hospitals. Just my 2 cents! I wish you all the best!
  6. Thanks all! This is great advice! I'm taking the NET this week at Central, and am really leaning towards them because their program starts in March (the soonest start date with no waiting list!) One question I had, how is the area that the school is in? Is it safe? I don't spend much time downtown, but I know there are good and bad parts of Cleveland. Also, any advice on how not to fail? :) How were clinicals? THANKS so much! I really appreciate input as this is my only source of first-hand opinions on the school!
  7. Hi, I have a question about CVCC! How was the program? How were the instructors? Did it prepare you well for your career? Any info. you have, I'd really appreciate as well!
  8. Hi all! I'm an STNA in NE Ohio looking into applying to LPN school in the Cleveland area. I'm looking at Central School of Practical Nursing, Marymount School of Practical Nursing, ATS Institute, and Tri-C (though Tri-C doesn't start til next Fall, and the others start in Spring or Summer). I'd appreciate any advice on these schools from anyone who attended or knows anything about any of these programs. Thanks!
